Overcoming "Gigantic" Fears

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the May 5, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Ps 118:6
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

Gen    6:1,2,4,5
And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.  And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Num   13:1-2,17-18 (to 1st ;), 21,25-28,30-33

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.

And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain: And see the land, what it is;

So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.

And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.  And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.  And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.  Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.  But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.  And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.  And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

Num   14:1,6-7, 9,10 (to 1st .)
And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.

And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes: And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.

Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.  But all the congregation bade stone them with stones.

Num   32:13

And the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the Lord, was consumed.

Ps 23:4

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

I Sam  17:2-4,8-9,11,16,32,40-41 (to 1st ;),42,49

And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.  And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.  And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.  If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.  And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David;

And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

Isa 41:10

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

II Tim 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

By Mary Baker Eddy

260:13
Science reveals the possibility of achieving all good, and sets mortals at work to discover what God has already done; but distrust of one's ability to gain the goodness desired and to bring out better and higher results, often hampers the trial of one's wings and ensures failure at the outset.

378:22-26

Disease is not an intelligence to dispute the empire of Mind or to dethrone Mind and take the government into its own hands.  Sickness is not a God-given, nor a self-constituted material power, which copes astutely with Mind and finally conquers it.

376:30
To fear and admit the power of disease, is to paralyze mental and scientific demonstration.

410:14-20
Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger.  The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love.  The Apostle John says: "There is no fear in Love, but perfect Love casteth out fear. . . . He that feareth is not made perfect in Love."

493:20-22

Disease is an experience of so-called mortal mind.  It is fear made manifest on the body.

411:27-4

Always begin your treatment by allaying the fear of patients.  Silently reassure them as to their exemption from disease and danger.  Watch the result of this simple rule of Christian Science, and you will find that it alleviates the symptoms of every disease.  If you succeed in wholly removing the fear, your patient is healed.  The great fact that God lovingly governs all, never punishing aught but sin, is your standpoint, from which to advance and destroy the human fear of sickness.

371:5-7,11-14 (to 1st .)

Disquisitions on disease have a mental effect similar to that produced on children by telling ghost-stories in the dark.

As frightened children look everywhere for the imaginary ghost, so sick humanity sees danger in every direction, and looks for relief in all ways except the right one.

197:16 (only)
We should master fear, instead of cultivating it.

196:31-2
The press unwittingly sends forth many sorrows and diseases among the human family.  It does this by giving names to diseases and by printing long descriptions which mirror images of disease distinctly in thought.

596:21-25

"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil." (Psalm xxiii. 4.)
Though the way is dark in mortal sense, divine Life and Love illumine it, destroy the unrest of mortal thought, the fear of death, and the supposed reality of error.

196:15-18
Sickness, sin, and death are not concomitants of Life or Truth.  No law supports them.  They have no relation to God wherewith to establish their power.

377:26
The cause of all so-called disease is mental, a mortal fear, a mistaken belief or conviction of the necessity and power of ill-health; also a fear that Mind is helpless to defend the life of man and incompetent to control it.  Without this ignorant human belief, any circumstance is of itself powerless to produce suffering.  It is latent belief in disease, as well as the fear of disease, which associates sickness with certain circumstances and causes the two to appear conjoined, even as poetry and music are reproduced in union by human memory.  Disease has no intelligence.  Unwittingly you sentence yourself to suffer.  The understanding of this will enable you to commute this self-sentence, and meet every circumstance with truth.  Disease is less than mind, and Mind can control it.

391:29-2
Mentally contradict every complaint from the body, and rise to the true consciousness of Life as Love,--as all that is pure, and bearing the fruits of Spirit.  Fear is the fountain of sickness, and you master fear and sin through divine Mind; hence it is through divine Mind that you overcome disease.

392:5-8
Fear, which is an element of all disease, must be cast out to readjust the balance for God.  Casting out evil and fear enables truth to outweigh error.

381:17,27
In infinite Life and Love there is no sickness, sin, nor death, and the Scriptures declare that we live, move, and have our being in the infinite God.

Let us banish sickness as an outlaw, and abide by the rule of perpetual harmony,--God's law.  It is man's moral right to annul an unjust sentence, a sentence never inflicted by divine authority.

368:31-32
When fear disappears, the foundation of disease is gone.
