Wednesday Readings: Praying About the Oil Spill

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the June 9, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Ps 46:1-3 (to 1st ,)
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled,

Eccl 3:14 (to 2nd :)

I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it:

Ezek 45:14 ( to 2nd ,)

Concerning the ordinance of oil, the bath of oil,

Ps 29:3 (to 1st :)
The voice of the Lord is upon the waters:

Ps 146:5

Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God:

Dan 2:1 2nd Nebuchadnezzar,2 (to 1st .),3,10,11
Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him.  Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams.

And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.

The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.  And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.

Dan 2:13 and (to Daniel),16,17,18 (to ;),19,20,23,28 there (to 1st ,),47

And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel

Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation.  Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret;

Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.  Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.

There is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets,

The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.

Job 33:26

He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.

Luke 1:37

For with God nothing shall be impossible.

II Kings 2:2 Elijah (to 2nd.),8-12 (to ,),14
Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee.

And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.  #And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.  And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.  And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.  And Elisha saw it,

And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

II Kings 6:1,2,4-7 and
And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.  Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.

And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood.  But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.  And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.  Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.

II Kings 4:38-41,44 (to 2nd ,)

And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets.  And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not.  So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.  But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.

So he set it before them, and they did eat,

Phil 4:13

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Matt 17:20 Jesus (to said), 20 verily
Jesus said verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Jer 42:3 1st the,6 we will (to 3rd ,),6 that
the Lord thy God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do.

we will obey the voice of the Lord our God,

that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.

Ps 108:13 (to :)
Through God we shall do valiantly:

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

By Mary Baker Eddy

SH 570:24
The waters will be pacified, and Christ will command the wave.

SH 424:10
Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection.

SH 122:1-7

The evidence of the physical senses often reverses the real Science of being, and so creates a reign of discord,--assigning seeming power to sin, sickness, and death; but the great facts of Life, rightly understood, defeat this triad of errors, contradict their false witnesses, and reveal the kingdom of heaven,--the actual reign of harmony on earth.

SH 304:19-20
Truth is not contaminated by error.

548:3-5 Science
Science separates error from truth, and breathes through the sacred pages the spiritual sense of life, substance, and intelligence.

SH 299:26
Corporeal sense, or error, may seem to hide Truth, health, harmony, and Science, as the mist obscures the sun or the mountain; but Science, the sunshine of Truth, will melt away the shadow and reveal the celestial peaks.

SH 182:32

The law of Christ, or Truth, makes all things possible to Spirit; but the so-called laws of matter would render Spirit of no avail, and demand obedience to materialistic codes, thus departing from the basis of one God, one lawmaker.  To suppose that God constitutes laws of inharmony is a mistake; discords have no support from nature or divine law, however much is said to the contrary.

SH 371:30
Truth is an alterative in the entire system, and can make it "every whit whole."

SH 418:5-9

Stick to the truth of being in contradistinction to the error that life, substance, or intelligence can be in matter.  Plead with an honest conviction of truth and a clear perception of the unchanging, unerring, and certain effect of divine Science.

SH 243:27
Truth, Life, and Love are a law of annihilation to everything unlike themselves, because they declare nothing except God.

SH 394:7-10
Knowledge that we can accomplish the good we hope for, stimulates the system to act in the direction which Mind points out.

SH 84:14
Acquaintance with the Science of being enables us to commune more largely with the divine Mind, to foresee and foretell events which concern the universal welfare, to be divinely inspired,--yea, to reach the range of fetterless Mind.

SH 85:7-9

Such intuitions reveal whatever constitutes and perpetuates harmony, enabling one to do good, but not evil.

SH 517:18-19
God has countless ideas, and they all have one Principle and parentage.

SH 128:4

The term Science, properly understood, refers only to the laws of God and to His government of the universe, inclusive of man.  From this it follows that business men and cultured scholars have found that Christian Science enhances their endurance and mental powers, enlarges their perception of character, gives them acuteness and comprehensiveness and an ability to exceed their ordinary capacity.  The human mind, imbued with this spiritual understanding, becomes more elastic, is capable of greater endurance, escapes somewhat from itself, and requires less repose.  A knowledge of the Science of being develops the latent abilities and possibilities of man.  It extends the atmosphere of thought, giving mortals access to broader and higher realms.  It raises the thinker into his native air of insight and perspicacity.

SH 199:25

Had Blondin believed it impossible to walk the rope over Niagara's abyss of waters, he could never have done it.  His belief that he could do it gave his thought-forces, called muscles, their flexibility and power which the unscientific might attribute to a lubricating oil.  His fear must have disappeared before his power of putting resolve into action could appear.

SH 83:13

The scientific manifestation of power is from the divine nature and is not supernatural, since Science is an explication of nature.  The belief that the universe, including man, is governed in general by material laws, but that occasionally Spirit sets aside these laws,--this belief belittles omnipotent wisdom, and gives to matter the precedence over Spirit.

SH 84:3-7
The ancient prophets gained their foresight from a spiritual, incorporeal standpoint, not by foreshadowing evil and mistaking fact for fiction,--predicting the future from a groundwork of corporeality and human belief.

SH 84:28-1
All we correctly know of Spirit comes from God, divine Principle, and is learned through Christ and Christian Science.  If this Science has been thoroughly learned and properly digested, we can know the truth more accurately than the astronomer can read the stars or calculate an eclipse.

SH 109:32
The three great verities of Spirit, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience,--Spirit possessing all power, filling all space, constituting all Science,--contradict forever the belief that matter can be actual.  These eternal verities reveal primeval existence as the radiant reality of God's creation, in which all that He has made is pronounced by His wisdom good.

505:16-20,26-29

Spirit imparts the understanding which uplifts consciousness and leads into all truth.  The Psalmist saith: "The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea."

This understanding is not intellectual, is not the result of scholarly attainments; it is the reality of all things brought to light.  God's ideas reflect the immortal, unerring, and infinite.

SH 180:25-27
When man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God all things are possible.

SH 199:21-22

The devotion of thought to an honest achievement makes the achievement possible.

119:1,21

When we endow matter with vague spiritual power,--that is, when we do so in our theories, for of course we cannot really endow matter with what it does not and cannot possess,--we disown the Almighty, for such theories lead to one of two things.  They either presuppose the self-evolution and self-government of matter, or else they assume that matter is the product of Spirit.  To seize the first horn of this dilemma and consider matter as a power in and of itself, is to leave the creator out of His own universe; while to grasp the other horn of the dilemma and regard God as the creator of matter, is not only to make Him responsible for all disasters, physical and moral, but to announce Him as their source, thereby making Him guilty of maintaining perpetual misrule in the form and under the name of natural law.

God is natural good, and is represented only by the idea of goodness; while evil should be regarded as unnatural, because it is opposed to the nature of Spirit, God.

SH 134:28
There is divine authority for believing in the superiority of spiritual power over material resistance.

SH 454:22-23
Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept.
