Coming Out of the Dark into the Light

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the April 7, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Ps. 119:28
My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.

Ps 42:1-3,5,9,10

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.  My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?  My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?  As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?

Job 3:1 opened,2-5,11,23,25,26

opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.  And Job spake, and said, Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.  Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.  Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?
For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.  I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

Job 18:1,5 the,6,18

Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.  The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him.

He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

Job 19:1
Then Job answered and said,

Job 29:2-4
Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me; When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness; As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;

Job 38:19
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

Job 40:6,7
Then answered the Lord unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

Job 42:1,2,5
Then Job answered the Lord, and said, I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.

I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.

Job 42:10,12 (to :)

And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.

So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning:

Ps 51:11,12

Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.  Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Isa. 60:1-2
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.  For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

Jer 29:10 (to 1st ,),11-14 I know
For thus saith the Lord,

I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.  Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.  And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.  And I will be found of you, saith the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

Ps 107:1,2,9,10,14,15

O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.  Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;

For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.  Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;

He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.  Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Ps 66:1-2,5 (to :),8-10,16,19 verily,20
Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands: Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious.

Come and see the works of God:

O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard: Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved.  For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.

Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.

verily God hath heard me; he hath attended to the voice of my prayer.  Blessed be God, which hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.

Ps 23:1-6
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Isa. 42:5 (to 1st ,),6,7

Thus saith God the Lord,

I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Ps 42:11

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 191:16-17
The human thought must free itself from self-imposed materiality and bondage.

SH 68:4-8
Sometime we shall learn how Spirit, the great architect, has created men and women in Science.  We ought to weary of the fleeting and false and to cherish nothing which hinders our highest selfhood.

SH 125:12-17

As human thought changes from one stage to another of conscious pain and painlessness, sorrow and joy,--from fear to hope and from faith to understanding,--the visible manifestation will at last be man governed by Soul, not by material sense.  Reflecting God's government, man is self-governed.

SH 374:18
You confess to ignorance of the future and incapacity to preserve your own existence, and this belief helps rather than hinders disease.  Such a state of mind induces sickness.  It is like walking in darkness on the edge of a precipice.  You cannot forget the belief of danger, and your steps are less firm because of your fear, and ignorance of mental cause and effect.

SH 246:1-3

Man is not a pendulum, swinging between evil and good, joy and sorrow, sickness and health, life and death.

SH 244:23-24 He, 25-28
He has neither birth nor death.

He does not pass from matter to Mind, from the mortal to the immortal, from evil to good, or from good to evil.  Such admissions cast us headlong into darkness and dogma.

SH 596:20-27
VALLEY.  Depression; meekness; darkness.
"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil." (Psalm xxiii. 4.)
Though the way is dark in mortal sense, divine Life and Love illumine it, destroy the unrest of mortal thought, the fear of death, and the supposed reality of error.  Christian Science, contradicting sense, maketh the valley to bud and blossom as the rose.

SH 551:24-26 Darkness

Darkness and doubt encompass thought, so long as it bases creation on materiality.

SH 371:14

Darkness induces fear.  The adult, in bondage to his beliefs, no more comprehends his real being than does the child; and the adult must be taken out of his darkness, before he can get rid of the illusive sufferings which throng the gloaming.  The way in divine Science is the only way out of this condition.

SH 186:7
Erring human mind-forces can work only evil under whatever name or pretence they are employed; for Spirit and matter, good and evil, light and darkness, cannot mingle.

SH 234:17-21
If mortals would keep proper ward over mortal mind, the brood of evils which infest it would be cleared out.  We must begin with this so-called mind and empty it of sin and sickness, or sin and sickness will never cease.

SH 248:15-16
What is the model before mortal mind?

SH 248:19-32

Do you not hear from all mankind of the imperfect model?  The world is holding it before your gaze continually.  The result is that you are liable to follow those lower patterns, limit your life-work, and adopt into your experience the angular outline and deformity of matter models.
To remedy this, we must first turn our gaze in the right direction, and then walk that way.  We must form perfect models in thought and look at them continually, or we shall never carve them out in grand and noble lives.  Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love--the kingdom of heaven--reign within us, and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.

Let us accept Science, relinquish all theories based on sense-testimony, give up imperfect models and illusive ideals; and so let us have one God, one Mind, and that one perfect, producing His own models of excellence.

Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy.  Let us re-joice that we are subject to the divine "powers that be."

SH 262:9,17
We cannot fathom the nature and quality of God's creation by diving into the shallows of mortal belief.  We must reverse our feeble flutterings--our efforts to find life and truth in matter--and rise above the testimony of the material senses, above the mortal to the immortal idea of God.  These clearer, higher views inspire the Godlike man to reach the absolute centre and circumference of his being.
Job said: "I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear:  but now mine eye seeth Thee."  Mortals will echo Job's thought, when the supposed pain and pleasure of matter cease to predominate.  They will then drop the false estimate of life and happiness, of joy and sorrow, and attain the bliss of loving unselfishly, working patiently, and conquering all that is unlike God.  Starting from a higher standpoint, one rises spontaneously, even as light emits light without effort; for "where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,--neither in nor of matter,--and the body will then utter no complaints.

Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love.

Christian Science destroys material beliefs through the understanding of Spirit, and the thoroughness of this work determines health.

SH 504:28-29
Spirit is light, and the contradiction of Spirit is matter, darkness, and darkness obscures light.

SH 215:12-21

Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life.
We are sometimes led to believe that darkness is as real as light; but Science affirms darkness to be only a mortal sense of the absence of light, at the coming of which darkness loses the appearance of reality.  So sin and sorrow, disease and death, are the suppositional absence of Life, God, and flee as phantoms of error before truth and love.

SH 262:27-31
The foundation of mortal discord is a false sense of man's origin.  To begin rightly is to end rightly.  Every concept which seems to begin with the brain begins falsely.  Divine Mind is the only cause or Principle of existence.

SH 191:1

The brain can give no idea of God's man.  It can take no cognizance of Mind.  Matter is not the organ of infinite Mind.

SH 304:16-20

Harmony is produced by its Principle, is controlled by it and abides with it.  Divine Principle is the Life of man.  Man's happiness is not, therefore, at the disposal of physical sense.  Truth is not contaminated by error.

SH 474:31
Truth destroys falsity and error, for light and darkness cannot dwell together.  Light extinguishes the darkness, and the Scripture declares that there is "no night there."  To Truth there is no error,--all is Truth.  To infinite Spirit there is no matter,--all is Spirit, divine Principle and its idea.

SH 304:9
This is the doctrine of Christian Science:  that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation, or object; that joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy; that good can never produce evil; that matter can never produce mind nor life result in death.  The perfect man--governed by God, his perfect Principle--is sinless and eternal.

SH 191:13
Thus the whole earth will be transformed by Truth on its pinions of light, chasing away the darkness of error.
