Wednesday Readings: Corruption

The following citations from the Bible and Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures were read during the July 22, 2009  Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

The Bible

Isa 5:20,23
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

Amos 5:12
For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

Est 2:16,17
So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.  And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Est 3:1,2,8-10,13,14

After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.  And all the king's servants, that were in the king's gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.

And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep they the king's laws: therefore it is not for the king's profit to suffer them.  If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king's treasuries.  And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews' enemy.

And the letters were sent by posts into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.  The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, that they should be ready against that day.

Est 4:1,2
When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry; And came even before the king's gate: for none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.

Est 5:1,3,4
Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king's house, over against the king's house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the gate of the house.

Then said the king unto her, What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.  And Esther answered, If it seem good unto the king, let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have prepared for him.

Est 7:1-6 (to 1st .)
So the king and Haman came to banquet with Esther the queen.  And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.  Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request: For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king's damage.  #Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?  And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman.

Est 8:1,2
On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews' enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her.  And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

Isa 33:15,16
He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.

Matt 6:19-21
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

I Cor 15:33 (to :), 34 (to ;),48,50

Be not deceived:

Awake to righteousness, and sin not;

As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.

Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

Matt 26:1,2,14-16
And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.

Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.  And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.

Matt 26:19-21 the disciples,25,36,39,47-50

the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.  Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.  And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I?  He said unto him, Thou hast said.

Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.

And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.  Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.  And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.  And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come?  Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

Matt 27:3-7
Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.  And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.  And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.  And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.  And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.

Eph 4:17-24

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.  But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Science and Health

449:28 (only)
Only virtue is a rebuke to vice.

234:32-3
Evil thoughts, lusts, and malicious purposes cannot go forth, like wandering pollen, from one human mind to another, finding unsuspected lodgment, if virtue and truth build a strong defence.

405:1 (only)
The basic error is mortal mind.

115:19-24
          SCIENTIFIC TRANSLATION OF MORTAL MIND

                 "First Degree^: Depravity."

PHYSICAL.  Evil beliefs, passions and appetites, fear, depraved will, self-justification, pride, envy, deceit, hatred, revenge, sin, sickness, disease, death.

252:15-23
The false evidence of material sense contrasts strikingly with the testimony of Spirit.  Material sense lifts its voice with the arrogance of reality and says:
I am wholly dishonest, and no man knoweth it.  I can cheat, lie, commit adultery, rob, murder, and I elude detection by smooth-tongued villainy.  Animal in propensity, deceitful in sentiment, fraudulent in purpose, I mean to make my short span of life one gala day.

404:3,22-25
If a man is an inebriate, a slave to tobacco, or the special servant of any one of the myriad forms of sin, meet and destroy these errors with the truth of being,--by exhibiting to the wrong-doer the suffering which his submission to such habits brings, and by convincing him that there is no real pleasure in false appetites.  A corrupt mind is manifested in a corrupt body.  Lust, malice, and all sorts of evil are diseased beliefs, and you can destroy them only by destroying the wicked motives which produce them.  If the evil is over in the repentant mortal mind, while its effects still remain on the individual, you can remove this disorder as God's law is fulfilled and reformation cancels the crime.  The healthy sinner is the hardened sinner.

Arouse the sinner to this new and true view of sin, show him that sin confers no pleasure, and this knowledge strengthens his moral courage and increases his ability to master evil and to love good.

253:18-19
If you believe in and practise wrong knowingly, you can at once change your course and do right.

43:32 (only)

  Love must triumph over hate.

47:10-26
Judas conspired against Jesus.  The world's ingratitude and hatred towards that just man effected his betrayal.  The traitor's price was thirty pieces of silver and the smiles of the Pharisees.  He chose his time, when the people were in doubt concerning Jesus' teachings.
A period was approaching which would reveal the infinite distance between Judas and his Master.  Judas Iscariot knew this.  He knew that the great goodness of that Master placed a gulf between Jesus and his betrayer, and this spiritual distance inflamed Judas' envy.  The greed for gold strengthened his ingratitude, and for a time quieted his remorse.  He knew that the world generally loves a lie better than Truth; and so he plotted the betrayal of Jesus in order to raise himself in popular estimation.  His dark plot fell to the ground, and the traitor fell with it.

48:17-21
Judas had the world's weapons.  Jesus had not one of them, and chose not the world's means of defence.  "He opened not his mouth."  The great demonstrator of Truth and Love was silent before envy and hate.

115:25-27

        "Second Degree": Evil beliefs disappearing.

MORAL.  Humanity, honesty, affection, compassion, hope, faith, meekness, temperance.

11:12-18

Mere legal pardon (and there is no other, for divine Principle never pardons our sins or mistakes till they are corrected) leaves the offender free to repeat the offence, if indeed, he has not already suffered sufficiently from vice to make him turn from it with loathing.  Truth bestows no pardon upon error, but wipes it out in the most effectual manner.

252:8
A knowledge of error and of its operations must precede that understanding of Truth which destroys error, until the entire mortal, material error finally disappears, and the eternal verity, man created by and of Spirit, is understood and recognized as the true likeness of his Maker.

241:5
Sensual treasures are laid up "where moth and rust doth corrupt."  Mortality is their doom.  Sin breaks in upon them, and carries off their fleeting joys.  The sensualist's affections are as imaginary, whimsical, and unreal as his pleasures.  Falsehood, envy, hypocrisy, malice, hate, revenge, and so forth, steal away the treasures of Truth.  Stripped of its coverings, what a mocking spectacle is sin!

186:17-18
Evil is self-assertive.  It says: "I am a real entity, overmastering good."

253:31-8
instead of the flesh.
The divine demand, "Be ye therefore perfect," is scientific, and the human footsteps leading to perfection are indispensable.  Individuals are consistent who, watching and praying, can "run, and not be weary; . . .  walk, and not faint," who gain good rapidly and hold their position, or attain slowly and yield not to discouragement.  God requires perfection, but not until the battle between Spirit and flesh is fought and the victory won.

405:5-11,18
Christian Science commands man to master the propensities,--to hold hatred in abeyance with kindness, to conquer lust with chastity, revenge with charity, and to overcome deceit with honesty.  Choke these errors in their early stages, if you would not cherish an army of conspirators against health, happiness, and success.

The good man finally can overcome his fear of sin.  This is sin's necessity,--to destroy itself.  Immortal man demonstrates the government of God, good, in which is no power to sin.

116:1-3
               "Third Degree": Understanding.

SPIRITUAL.  Wisdom, purity, spiritual understanding, spiritual power, love, health, holiness.

346:29-30
Material beliefs must be expelled to make room for spiritual understanding.

116:4-10

In the third degree mortal mind disappears, and man as God's image appears.  Science so reverses the evidence before the corporeal human senses, as to make this Scriptural testimony true in our hearts, "The last shall be first, and the first last," so that God and His idea may be to us what divinity really is and must of necessity be,--all-inclusive.

451:14
Man walks in the direction towards which he looks, and where his treasure is, there will his heart be also.  If our hopes and affections are spiritual, they come from above, not from beneath, and they bear as of old the fruits of the Spirit.

277:10
If goodness and spirituality are real, evil and materiality are unreal and cannot be the outcome of an infinite God, good.

393:12
Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good.  God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man.

248:29
Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love--the kingdom of heaven--reign within us, and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.
