The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the Jan. 13, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Ps 118:22,23
The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.
This is the Lord's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
Isa 2:2
And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
Matt 15:29 (to Jesus),29 came nigh,30-31
And Jesus came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.
And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:
Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
Matt 16:13-18
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
John 14:12,16,17,25,26,29
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
I Cor 3:9-11 we
we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.
According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Acts 3:1-10
Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.
And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.
And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us.
And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.
Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
And all the people saw him walking and praising God:
And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.
acts 4:8,10,11
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
I Pet 2:4-6
To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
Acts 13:1 (to ;),2-4 (to departed),9 (to 3rd ,),16 stood
Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers;
As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost,
stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.
Acts 9:20
And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.
Acts 13:38,39,42,45,50 the,51,52
Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:
And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.
the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.
But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.
And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.
Acts 14:1-5,6 (to Lystra),8-10,19-21,27
And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.
But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.
Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.
And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them, They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra
And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:
The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.
And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.
Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.
And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
Acts 16:5
And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.
Eph 2:19-22
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
I Cor 3:16,17 for the
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 583:12
CHURCH. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever
rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.
SH 136:1-2,9-16
Jesus established his church and maintained his mission
on a spiritual foundation of Christ-healing.
The question then as now was, How did Jesus heal the
sick? His answer to this question the world rejected.
He appealed to his students: "Whom do
men say that I, the Son of man, am?" That
is: Who or what is it that is thus identified with casting
out evils and healing the sick? They replied, "Some
say that thou art John the Baptist; some, Elias; and
others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets."
Yearning to be understood, the Master repeated,
"But whom say ye that I am?"
With his usual impetuosity, Simon replied for his
brethren, and his reply set forth a great fact: "Thou
art the Christ, the Son of the living God!"
That is: The Messiah is what thou hast declared,
— Christ, the spirit of God, of Truth, Life, and
Love, which heals mentally. This assertion elicited from
Martyrs inevitable.
Jesus the benediction, "Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona:
for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee,
but my Father which is in heaven;" that is, Love hath
shown thee the way of Life!
Before this the impetuous disciple had been called
only by his common names, Simon Bar-jona, or son of
Jona; but now the Master gave him a spiritual
name in these words: "And I say also
unto thee, That thou art Peter; and upon this rock [the
meaning of the Greek word petros, or stone] I will build
my church; and the gates of hell [hades, the underworld,
or the grave] shall not prevail against it." In
other words, Jesus purposed founding his society, not
on the personal Peter as a mortal, but on the Godpower
which lay behind Peter's confession of the true
It was now evident to Peter that divine Life, Truth, and
Love, and not a human personality, was the healer of the
sick and a rock, a firm foundation in the realm
of harmony.
SH 139:8-27
The Christian era was ushered in with signs and
wonders. Reforms have commonly been attended with
bloodshed and persecution, even when the end has been
brightness and peace; but the present new, yet old, reform
in religious faith will teach men patiently and wisely
to stem the tide of sectarian bitterness, whenever it flows
The decisions by vote of Church Councils as to what
should and should not be considered Holy Writ; the manifest
mistakes in the ancient versions; the
thirty thousand different readings in the Old
Testament, and the three hundred thousand in the New,
— these facts show how a mortal and material sense stole
into the divine record, with its own hue darkening to some
extent the inspired pages. But mistakes could neither
wholly obscure the divine Science of the Scriptures seen
from Genesis to Revelation, mar the demonstration of
Jesus, nor annul the healing by the prophets, who foresaw
that "the stone which the builders rejected" would become
"the head of the corner."
SH 37:5-8
History is full of records of suffering. "The blood of
the martyrs is the seed of the Church." Mortals try in
vain to slay Truth with the steel or the stake,
but error falls only before the sword of Spirit.
SH 224:17-21
The modern lash is less
material than the Roman scourge, but it is equally as
cutting. Cold disdain, stubborn resistance, opposition
from church, state laws, and the press, are still the harbingers
of truth's full-orbed appearing.
SH 343:25-28
Anciently those apostles who were Jesus' students,
as well as Paul who was not one of his students, healed
the sick and reformed the sinner by their
SH 560:22

Abuse of the motives and religion of St. Paul hid from
view the apostle's character, which made him equal to
his great mission. Persecution of all who have
spoken something new and better of God has
not only obscured the light of the ages, but has been fatal
to the persecutors. Why? Because it has hid from
them the true idea which has been presented. To misunderstand
Paul, was to be ignorant of the divine idea he
taught. Ignorance of the divine idea betrays at once a
greater ignorance of the divine Principle of the idea — ignorance
of Truth and Love. The understanding of Truth
and Love, the Principle which works out the ends of eternal
good and destroys both faith in evil and the practice of
evil, leads to the discernment of the divine idea.
SH 147:6
Late in the nineteenth century I demonstrated the divine
rules of Christian Science. They were submitted to the
broadest practical test, and everywhere, when honestly applied
under circumstances where demonstration was humanly
possible, this Science showed that Truth had lost
none of its divine and healing efficacy, even though centuries
had passed away since Jesus practised these rules
on the hills of Judaea and in the valleys of Galilee.
SH 107:3-10
God had been graciously preparing me during many
years for the reception of this final revelation of the absolute
divine Principle of scientific mental healing.
This apodictical Principle points to the revelation of
Immanuel, "God with us," — the sovereign ever-presence,
delivering the children of men from
every ill "that flesh is heir to."
SH 288:20-26
The chief stones in the temple of Christian Science are
to be found in the following postulates: that Life is God,
good, and not evil; that Soul is sinless, not
to be found in the body; that Spirit is not, and
cannot be, materialized; that Life is not subject
to death; that the spiritual real man has no birth, no material
life, and no death.
SH 28:9
While respecting all that is good in the Church or out
of it, one's consecration to Christ is more on the ground
of demonstration than of profession. In conscience, we
cannot hold to beliefs outgrown; and by understanding
more of the divine Principle of the deathless Christ, we
are enabled to heal the sick and to triumph over sin.
271:1-5,20-29 (to 1st .)
Christ's Christianity is the chain of scientific being reappearing
in all ages, maintaining its obvious correspondence with
the Scriptures and uniting all periods in the design of
Our Master said, "But the Comforter . . . shall
teach you all things." When the Science of Christianity
appears, it will lead you into all truth. The
Sermon on the Mount is the essence of this
Science, and the eternal life, not the death of Jesus, is
its outcome.
Those, who are willing to leave their nets or to cast
them on the right side for Truth, have the opportunity
now, as aforetime, to learn and to practise
Christian healing.
SH 332:19
X. Jesus demonstrated Christ; he proved that Christ
is the divine idea of God — the Holy Ghost,
or Comforter, revealing the divine Principle,
Love, and leading into all truth.
Truth's immortal idea is sweeping down the centuries,
gathering beneath its wings the sick and sinning. My
weary hope tries to realize that happy day, when man shall
recognize the Science of Christ and love his neighbor as
himself, — when he shall realize God's omnipotence and
the healing power of the divine Love in what it has done
and is doing for mankind. The promises will be fulfilled.
The time for the reappearing of the divine healing
is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly
all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ's
cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of
Christian healing.
In the words of St. John: "He shall give you another
Comforter, that he may abide with you forever." This
Comforter I understand to be Divine Science.
SH 583:14
The Church is that institution, which affords proof of
its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the
dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension
of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of
divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and
healing the sick.
