Christian Science Practice

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the May 12, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Luke 4:14 Jesus
Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

Luke 11:1,2 (to 1st ,)
And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.  And he said unto them,

Matt. 6:9-13 (to 1st .)
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.

Luke 7:36-44,47-48
And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.  And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.  Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.  And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.  There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.  And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both.  Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?  Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.  And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.

Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.  And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

Matt 7:28 (to 1st ,)
And it came to pass,

Matt 8:1 great,2-3,5-10,13,16
great multitudes followed him.  And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.  And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.  And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.  The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.  For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.  When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

John 12:35 (to 1st ,)
Then Jesus said unto them,

John 14:1 ye,12 (to 2nd ;)
ye believe in God, believe also in me.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do;

Luke 9:1-2,6,10 (to 1st .)
Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.  And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done.

Luke 10:1-3 (to :),4,5,7 (to 1st .)
After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.  Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.  Go your ways:

Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.  And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.

And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire.

Matt 6:31 take,33
take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Luke 10:8 (to 2nd ,),9 heal,17-20
And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you,

heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.  And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.  Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.  Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Luke 7:22 Go (to 2nd ,)
Go your way,

Matt. 10:8
Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

BY MAY BAKER EDDY

SH 111:11-14
The Principle of divine metaphysics is God; the practice of divine metaphysics is the utilization of the power of Truth over error; its rules demonstrate its Science.

SH 162:16-19
Working out the rules of Science in practice, the author has restored health in cases of both acute and chronic disease in their severest forms.

SH 323:13-18
In order to apprehend more, we must put into practice what we already know.  We must recollect that Truth is demonstrable when understood, and that good is not understood until demonstrated.  If "faithful over a few things," we shall be made rulers over many; but the one unused talent decays and is lost.

SH 182:12
It is impossible to work from two standpoints.  If we attempt it, we shall presently "hold to the one, and despise the other."

SH 452:18 (only)
Right is radical.

SH 490:16
Our only need is to know this and reduce to practice the real man's divine Principle, Love.

SH 144:16-18
Willing the sick to recover is not the metaphysical practice of Christian Science, but is sheer animal magnetism.

SH 442:16-25
Neither animal magnetism nor hypnotism enters into the practice of Christian Science, in which truth cannot be reversed, but the reverse of error is true.  An improved belief cannot retrograde.  When Christ changes a belief of sin or of sickness into a better belief, then belief melts into spiritual understanding, and sin, disease, and death disappear.  Christ, Truth, gives mortals temporary food and clothing until the material, transformed with the ideal, disappears, and man is clothed and fed spiritually.

SH 410:24-25
Selfishness does not appear in the practice of Truth or Christian Science.

SH 483:30-32
One must fulfil one's mission without timidity or dissimulation, for to be well done, the work must be done unselfishly.

SH 167:24-26,30
There is but one way--namely, God and His idea--which leads to spiritual being.

Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized.

366:30-31
If we would open their prison doors for the sick, we must first learn to bind up the broken-hearted.

367:3
The tender word and Christian encouragement of an invalid, pitiful patience with his fears and the removal of them, are better than hecatombs of gushing theories, stereotyped borrowed speeches, and the doling of arguments, which are but so many parodies on legitimate Christian Science, aflame with divine Love.

410:29-30
Christian scientific practice begins with Christ's keynote of harmony, "Be not afraid!"

411:27-32
Always begin your treatment by allaying the fear of patients.  Silently reassure them as to their exemption from disease and danger.  Watch the result of this simple rule of Christian Science, and you will find that it alleviates the symptoms of every disease.

SH xi:9-15
The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation.  Now, as then, these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural.

SH 370:18-20
The moral and spiritual facts of health, whispered into thought, produce very direct and marked effects on the body.

SH 113:5-6
The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love.

SH 365:15-24
If the Scientist reaches his patient through divine Love, the healing work will be accomplished at one visit, and the disease will vanish into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine.  If the Scientist has enough Christly affection to win his own pardon, and such commendation as the Magdalen gained from Jesus, then he is Christian enough to practise scientifically and deal with his patients compassionately; and the result will correspond with the spiritual intent.

SH 473:18
In an age of ecclesiastical despotism, Jesus introduced the teaching and practice of Christianity, affording the proof of Christianity's truth and love; but to reach his example and to test its unerring Science according to his rule, healing sickness, sin, and death, a better understanding of God as divine Principle, Love, rather than personality or the man Jesus, is required.

SH 476:32-5
Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals.  In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.  Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy.

SH x:22-27
The divine Principle of healing is proved in the personal experience of any sincere seeker of Truth.  Its purpose is good, and its practice is safer and more potent than that of any other sanitary method.  The unbiased Christian thought is soonest touched by Truth, and convinced of it.

SH 417:20-21,27-2
To the Christian Science healer, sickness is a dream from which the patient needs to be awakened.

Explain audibly to your patients, as soon as they can bear it, the complete control which Mind holds over the body.  Show them how mortal mind seems to induce disease by certain fears and false conclusions, and how divine Mind can cure by opposite thoughts.  Give your patients an underlying understanding to support them and to shield them from the baneful effects of their own conclusions.

418:7-13,16-27,28-32
Plead with an honest conviction of truth and a clear perception of the unchanging, unerring, and certain effect of divine Science.  Then, if your fidelity is half equal to the truth of your plea, you will heal the sick.

It must be clear to you that sickness is no more the reality of being than is sin.

Whatever the belief is, if arguments are used to destroy it, the belief must be repudiated, and the negation must extend to the supposed disease and to whatever decides its type and symptoms.  Truth is affirmative, and confers harmony.  All metaphysical logic is inspired by this simple rule of Truth, which governs all reality.  By the truthful arguments you employ, and especially by the spirit of Truth and Love which you entertain, you will heal the sick.

Include moral as well as physical belief in your efforts to destroy error.

Speak the truth to every form of error.  Tumors, ulcers, tubercles, inflammation, pain, deformed joints, are waking dream-shadows, dark images of mortal thought, which flee before the light of Truth.

SH 420:28-32
If it becomes necessary to startle mortal mind to break its dream of suffering, vehemently tell your patient that he must awake.  Turn his gaze from the false evidence of the senses to the harmonious facts of Soul and immortal being.

SH 421:15-18 (to 2nd .)
Insist vehemently on the great fact which covers the whole ground, that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside Him.  There is ^no disease^.

SH 259:11
The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,--perfect God and perfect man,--as the basis of thought and demonstration.

SH 426:5-9
The discoverer of Christian Science finds the path less difficult when she has the high goal always before her thoughts, than when she counts her footsteps in endeavoring to reach it.  When the destination is desirable, expectation speeds our progress.

SH 15:28-30
Practice not profession, understanding not belief, gain the ear and right hand of omnipotence and they assuredly call down infinite blessings.

367:27
I long to see the consummation of my hope, namely, the student's higher attainments in this line of light.
