Wednesday Readings: Search the Scriptures

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the April 11, 2012 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

Subject: Search the Scriptures

The Bible

Isa 34:16 (to :)
Seek ye out of the book of the Lord, and read:

Deut 30:11-14
For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.  It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?  Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?  But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.

Josh 1:8
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

John 4:43, 44
Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.  For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

John 5:1, 18 the Jews, 19, 24, 39, 43 (to : ), 46 had ye, 47
After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.  Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not:

had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.  But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

Matt 22:15, 29
Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

Acts 8:26 - 40 (to :)
And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.  And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.  Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.  And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?  And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.  The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?  Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.  And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?  And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.  And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.  But Philip was found at Azotus:

II Tim 3:1 - 5 (to :), 7, 9, 13-17 evil men
This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof:

Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.

evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.  But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Psa 12:6
The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
by Mary Baker Eddy

547:23-25, 31-5
  The Scriptures are very sacred.  Our aim must be to have them understood spiritually, for only by this understanding can truth be gained.

  It is this spiritual perception of Scripture, which lifts humanity out of disease and death and inspires faith.  "The Spirit and the bride say, Come! . . . and whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely."  Christian Science separates error from truth, and breathes through the sacred pages the spiritual sense of life, substance, and intelligence.

  There will be greater mental opposition to the spiritual, scientific meaning of the Scriptures than there has ever been since the Christian era began.

  The decisions by vote of Church Councils as to what should and should not be considered Holy Writ; the manifest mistakes in the ancient versions; the thirty thousand different readings in the Old Testament, and the three hundred thousand in the New, --these facts show how a mortal and material sense stole into the divine record, with its own hue darkening to some extent the inspired pages.  But mistakes could neither wholly obscure the divine Science of the Scriptures seen from Genesis to Revelation, mar the demonstration of Jesus, nor annul the healing by the prophets, who foresaw that "the stone which the builders rejected" would become "the head of the corner."

Its only priest is the spiritualized man.  The Bible declares that all believers are made "kings and priests unto God."  The outsiders did not then, and do not now, understand this ruling of the Christ; therefore they cannot demonstrate God's healing power.

  Acquaintance with the original texts, and willingness to give up human beliefs (established by hierarchies, and instigated sometimes by the worst passions of men), open the way for Christian Science to be understood, and make the Bible the chart of life, where the buoys and healing currents of Truth are pointed out.

  My discovery, that erring, mortal, misnamed ^mind^ produces all the organism and action of the mortal body, set my thoughts to work in new channels, and led up to my demonstration of the proposition that Mind is All and matter is naught as the leading factor in Mind-science.

  For three years after my discovery, I sought the solution of this problem of Mind-healing, searched the Scriptures and read little else, kept aloof from society, and devoted time and energies to discovering a positive rule.

  In following these leadings of scientific revelation, the Bible was my only textbook.  The Scriptures were illumined; reason and revelation were reconciled, and afterwards the truth of Christian Science was demonstrated. No human pen nor tongue taught me the Science contained in this book, SCIENCE AND HEALTH; and neither tongue nor pen can overthrow it.  This book may be distorted by shallow criticism or by careless or malicious students, and its ideas may be temporarily abused and misrepresented; but the Science and truth therein will forever remain to be discerned and demonstrated.

  The divine Science taught in the original language of the Bible came through inspiration, and needs inspiration to be understood.  Hence the misapprehension of the spiritual meaning of the Bible, and the misinterpretation of the Word in some instances by uninspired writers, who only wrote down what an inspired teacher had said.

  The one important interpretation of Scripture is the spiritual.

  I have revised SCIENCE AND HEALTH only to give a clearer and fuller expression of its original meaning.  Spiritual ideas unfold as we advance.  A human perception of divine Science, however limited, must be correct in order to be Science and subject to demonstration.  A germ of infinite Truth, though least in the kingdom of heaven, is the higher hope on earth, but it will be rejected and reviled until God prepares the soil for the seed.  That which when sown bears immortal fruit, enriches mankind only when it is understood,--hence the many readings given the Scriptures, and the requisite revisions of SCIENCE AND HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES.

  Christian Science, understood, coincides with the Scriptures, and sustains logically and demonstratively every point it presents.  Otherwise it would not be Science, and could not present its proofs.  Christian Science is neither made up of contradictory aphorisms nor of the inventions of those who scoff at God.  It presents the calm and clear verdict of Truth against error, uttered and illustrated by the prophets, by Jesus, by his apostles, as is recorded throughout the Scriptures.

The spiritual sense of the Scriptures brings out the scientific sense, and is the new tongue referred to in the last chapter of Mark's Gospel.

The Bible has been my only authority.  I have had no other guide in "the straight and narrow way" of Truth.

  1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.

Hymn 114
 John Burton
 Holy Bible, book divine,
 Precious treasure, thou art mine:
 Mine to tell me whence I came;
 Mine to tell me what I am;
 Mine to chide me when I rove,
 Mine to show a Saviour's love;
 Mine thou art to guide and guard;
 Mine to give a rich reward;
 Mine to comfort in distress,
 With a Saviour's tenderness;
 Mine to show, by living faith,
 Man can triumph over death.

Hymn 84
 Based on a hymn by
 Theodor V. Oldenburg
 God's eternal Word is spoken,
   Piercing mists, around, above;
 Of eternal might the token,
   Emblem of eternal Love;
 Out of darkness, world-enthralling,
 Into Light, O hear it calling.
 Word of God, O Word eternal,
   May we hear thy living voice,
 Learn the power of Love supernal,
   Learn obedience,--and rejoice;
 God's commands forever heeding,
 Follow where His love is leading.

Hymn 101
 Maude de Verse Newton
 He sent His Word, His holy Word,
   And grieving hearts were healed;
 Uplifted they beheld in light
   Man's heritage revealed;
 For this we bless Thee, Lord.
 He sent His Word, His shining Word
   Of Truth, forever one,
 And sons of men rejoice to know
   The dream of sorrow done;
 For this we bless Thee, Lord.
 He sent His Word, His faithful Word,
   And hosts who toil in vain
 Reject the falsehood ages taught
   And rise to Life again;
 For this we bless Thee, Lord.
