Wednesday Readings: Witness to the Christ Light

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the January 5, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Gen 1:3 God
God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Isa 60:1-4 (to :), 19,20 (to 1st ,)
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.  For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.  And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.  Lift up thine eyes round about, and see:

The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.  Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light,

John 1:1-9,14-17,29,30,32,34

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  The same was in the beginning with God.  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.  And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.  #There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.  The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.  He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.  That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.  #John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.  And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.  For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.  This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

John 3:16,17
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Ps. 36:9 in

in thy light shall we see light.

John 5:19, 30-37 (to 1st .)

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.  If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.  There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.  Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.  But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.  He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.  But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me.

John 8:12
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

John 9:5
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

John 12:35,36 (to 1st .)
Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.  While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light.

John 14:19 (to :)
Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me:

John 14:25-26
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Acts 21:37 as (to 1st ?)

as Paul was to be led into the castle, he said unto the chief captain, May I speak unto thee?

Acts 22:1 (to ye),3,5-15
Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye

I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.  And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.  And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?  And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.  And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.  And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.  And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.  And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there, Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.  And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.  For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

Rev. 1:1-2
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

Rev. 10:1-2 (to :)
And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: And he had in his hand a little book open:

Rev 18:1
And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

II Cor 4:6
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

503:18
^Genesis^ i. 3.  And God said, Let there be light:  and there was light.

SH 47:7-8
The influx of light was sudden.

504:9-14, 23-31
This light is not from the sun nor from volcanic flames, but it is the revelation of Truth and of spiritual ideas.  This also shows that there is no place where God's light is not seen, since Truth, Life, and Love fill immensity and are ever-present.

The rays of infinite Truth, when gathered into the focus of ideas, bring light instantaneously, whereas a thousand years of human doctrines, hypotheses, and vague conjectures emit no such effulgence.
Did infinite Mind create matter, and call it ^light^?  Spirit is light, and the contradiction of Spirit is matter, darkness, and darkness obscures light.  Material sense is nothing but a supposition of the absence of Spirit.

SH 510:27-1

Light is a symbol of Mind, of Life, Truth, and Love, and not a vitalizing property of matter.  Science reveals only one Mind, and this one shining by its own light and governing the universe, including man, in perfect harmony.

SH 325:30-32
When first spoken in any age, Truth, like the light, "shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not."

503:28-2
God, Spirit, dwelling in infinite light and harmony from which emanates the true idea, is never reflected by aught but the good.

561:16-20,29-31,27-29,32-3
John saw the human and divine coincidence, shown in the man Jesus, as divinity embracing humanity in Life and its demonstration,--reducing to human perception and understanding the Life which is God.

In the first chapter of the Fourth Gospel it is written, "There was a man sent from God . . . to bear witness of that Light."

The light portrayed is really neither solar nor lunar, but spiritual Life, which is "the light of men."

John the Baptist prophesied the coming of the immaculate Jesus, and John saw in those days the spiritual idea as the Messiah, who would baptize with the Holy Ghost,--divine Science.

SH 589:16
JESUS.  The highest human corporeal concept of the divine idea, rebuking and destroying error and bringing to light man's immortality.

583:10
CHRIST.  The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error.

SH 347:14-22
Christ, as the spiritual or true idea of God, comes now as of old, preaching the gospel to the poor, healing the sick, and casting out evils.  Is it error which is restoring an essential element of Christianity,--namely, apostolic, divine healing?  No; it is the Science of Christianity which is restoring it, and is the light shining in darkness, which the darkness comprehends not.

SH 338:1-8
Christian Science, rightly understood, leads to eternal harmony.  It brings to light the only living and true God and man as made in His likeness; whereas the opposite belief--that man originates in matter and has beginning and end, that he is both soul and body, both good and evil, both spiritual and material--terminates in discord and mortality, in the error which must be destroyed by Truth.

SH 510:9
Truth and Love enlighten the understanding, in whose "light shall we see light;" and this illumination is reflected spiritually by all who walk in the light and turn away from a false material sense.

SH 153:13 (only)
This discovery leads to more light.

SH 461:11

Only by the illumination of the spiritual sense, can the light of understanding be thrown upon this Science, because Science reverses the evidence before the material senses and furnishes the eternal interpretation of God and man.

SH 324:20
When the truth first appeared to him in Science, Paul was made blind, and his blindness was felt; but spiritual light soon enabled him to follow the example and teachings of Jesus, healing the sick and preaching Christianity throughout Asia Minor, Greece, and even in imperial Rome.

SH 215:12
Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life.

SH 326:23
Saul of Tarsus beheld the way--the Christ, or Truth --only when his uncertain sense of right yielded to a spiritual sense, which is always right.  Then the man was changed.  Thought assumed a nobler outlook, and his life became more spiritual.  He learned the wrong that he had done in persecuting Christians, whose religion he had not understood, and in humility he took the new name of Paul.  He beheld for the first time the true idea of Love, and learned a lesson in divine Science.

SH 293:28
Christian Science brings to light Truth and its supremacy, universal harmony, the entireness of God, good, and the nothingness of evil.

SH 558:10-16

To mortal sense Science seems at first obscure, abstract, and dark; but a bright promise crowns its brow.  When understood, it is Truth's prism and praise.  When you look it fairly in the face, you can heal by its means, and it has for you a light above the sun, for God "is the light thereof."
