Witchcraft & Ghosts

The following citations from the Bible and Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures were read during the October 28, 2009  Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, Ohio. After the readings, members of the congregation share related experiences of how God helps in times of trouble.

The Bible

Gal 5:19 (to ;),20,21 and,22,23
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these;

Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Isa 8:19 (to 1st ?)

And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God?

Matt 7:15 (to 1st ,)

Beware of false prophets,

Lev 19:31
Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.

Isa 30:1(to ;),2,9 this (to ,),10,12,13,15
Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me;

That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!

this is a rebellious people,

Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon: Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.

For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.

II Chron 33:1-3 (to 2nd ,),6,7 (to 3rd ,),9-13,15
Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem: But did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, like unto the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.  #For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for Baalim,

And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.  And he set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God,

So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the Lord had destroyed before the children of Israel.  And the Lord spake to Manasseh, and to his people: but they would not hearken.  Wherefore the Lord brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.  And when he was in affliction, he besought the Lord his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord he was God.

And he took away the strange gods, and the idol out of the house of the Lord, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the Lord, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city.

Ezek 12:24 there,25
there shall be no more any vain vision nor flattering divination within the house of Israel.  For I am the Lord: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged: for in your days, O rebellious house, will I say the word, and will perform it, saith the Lord God.

I Sam 28:3-7,11,12 (to :),13-16 (to 3rd ,),17 (to 2nd ,),18 (to 1st ,),19
Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.  And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa.  And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.  And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.  #Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.

Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.  And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice:

And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou?  And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.  And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.  #And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.  Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee,

And the Lord hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the Lord hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand,

Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the Lord,

Moreover the Lord will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the Lord also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

the Lord (to :)
Deut 18:9-15
When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.  There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.  For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.  Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.  For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.  #The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

Mark 1:14 Jesus,15
Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

John 12:46
I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

John 3:19 light is,20,21

light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.  But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Col 1:2 Grace,10 walk,11 (to 1st ,),12,13
Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might,

Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Eph 6:10 my,12 we

my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Eph 5:5 (to no)

For this ye know, that no idolater
idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

535:10-12
Divine Science deals its chief blow at the supposed material foundations of life and intelligence.  It dooms idolatry.

70:6-7
There is but one Spirit.

93:21-26 (to 1st .)
The belief that Spirit is finite as well as infinite has darkened all history.  In Christian Science, Spirit, as a proper noun, is the name of the Supreme Being.  It means quantity and quality, and applies exclusively to God.  The modifying derivatives of the word ^spirit^ refer only to quality, not to God.

70:9
The supposition that corporeal beings are spirits, or that there are good and evil spirits, is a mistake.

478:4
Even according to the teachings of natural science, man has never beheld Spirit or Soul leaving a body or entering it.  What basis is there for the theory of indwelling spirit, except the claim of mortal belief?  What would be thought of the declaration that a house was inhabited, and by a certain class of persons, when no such persons were ever seen to go into the house or to come out of it, nor were they even visible through the windows?  Who can see a soul in the body?

72:9-13

So-called ^spirits^ are but corporeal communicators.  As light destroys darkness and in the place of darkness all is light, so (in absolute Science) Soul, or God, is the only truth-giver to man.  Truth destroys mortality, and brings to light immortality.

73:3-18
Spiritualism calls one person, living in this world, ^material^, but another, who has died to-day a sinner and supposedly will return to earth to-morrow, it terms a ^spirit^.  The fact is that neither the one nor the other is infinite Spirit, for Spirit is God, and man is His likeness.

The belief that one man, as spirit, can control another man, as matter, upsets both the individuality and the Science of man, for man is image.  God controls man, and God is the only Spirit.  Any other control or attraction of so-called spirit is a mortal belief, which ought to be known by its fruit,--the repetition of evil.

If Spirit, or God, communed with mortals or controlled them through electricity or any other form of matter, the divine order and the Science of omnipotent, omnipresent Spirit would be destroyed.

82:9-27
If spiritual life has been won by the departed, they cannot return to material existence, because different states of consciousness are involved, and one person cannot exist in two different states of consciousness at the same time.  In sleep we do not communicate with the dreamer by our side despite his physical proximity, because both of us are either unconscious or are wandering in our dreams through different mazes of consciousness.

In like manner it would follow, even if our departed friends were near us and were in as conscious a state of existence as before the change we call death, that their state of consciousness must be different from ours.  We are not in their state, nor are they in the mental realm in which we dwell. Communion between them and ourselves would be prevented by this difference. The mental states are so unlike, that intercommunion is as impossible as it would be between a mole and a human being.

71:21-25 (to1st .)
When the Science of Mind is understood, spiritualism will be found mainly erroneous, having no scientific basis nor origin, no proof nor power outside of human testimony.  It is the offspring of the physical senses.

71:25-32 I never
I never could believe in spiritualism.
The basis and structure of spiritualism are alike material and physical.  Its spirits are so many corporealities, limited and finite in character and quality.  Spiritualism therefore presupposes Spirit, which is ever infinite, to be a corporeal being, a finite form,--a theory contrary to Christian Science.

81:5-6

If Spiritualists understood the Science of being, their belief in mediumship would vanish.

587:1
GHOST.  An illusion; a belief that mind is outlined and limited; a supposition that spirit is finite.

352:17-27
Children, like adults, ^ought^ to fear a reality which can harm them and which they do not understand, for at any moment they may become its helpless victims; but instead of increasing children's fears by declaring ghosts to be real, merciless, and powerful, thus watering the very roots of childish timidity, children should be assured that their fears are groundless, that ghosts are not realities, but traditional beliefs, erroneous and man-made.

In short, children should be told not to believe in ghosts, because there are no such things.

353:13-14,19-22

The age has not wholly outlived the sense of ghostly beliefs.

We must give up the spectral at all points.  We must not continue to admit the somethingness of superstition, but we must yield up all belief in it and be wise.

329:32-2

Human resistance to divine Science weakens in proportion as mortals give up error for Truth and the understanding of being supersedes mere belief.

371:11-14 (to 2nd .)
As frightened children look everywhere for the imaginary ghost, so sick humanity sees danger in every direction, and looks for relief in all ways except the right one.  Darkness induces fear.

504:28-29

Spirit is light, and the contradiction of Spirit is matter, darkness, and darkness obscures light.

215:15-18
We are sometimes led to believe that darkness is as real as light; but Science affirms darkness to be only a mortal sense of the absence of light, at the coming of which darkness loses the appearance of reality.

71:1
Nothing is real and eternal,--nothing is Spirit,--but God and His idea.  Evil has no reality.  It is neither person, place, nor thing, but is simply a belief, an illusion of material sense.

322:15-17
The necromancy of yesterday foreshadowed the mesmerism and hypnotism of to-day.

101:29-8
In no instance is the effect of animal magnetism, recently called hypnotism, other than the effect of illusion.  Any seeming benefit derived from it is proportional to one's faith in esoteric magic.

Animal magnetism has no scientific foundation, for God governs all that is real, harmonious, and eternal, and His power is neither animal nor human.  Its basis being a belief and this belief animal, in Science animal magnetism, mesmerism, or hypnotism is a mere negation, possessing neither intelligence, power, nor reality, and in sense it is an unreal concept of the so-called mortal mind.

86:13-20
Mortals evolve images of thought.  These may appear to the ignorant to be apparitions; but they are mysterious only because it is unusual to see thoughts, though we can always feel their influence.  Haunted houses, ghostly voices, unusual noises, and apparitions brought out in dark seances either involve feats by tricksters, or they are images and sounds evolved involuntarily by mortal mind.

228:25-27

There is no power apart from God.  Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God.

275:26 (only),27
The true understanding of God is spiritual.

It destroys the false evidence that misleads thought and points to other gods, or other so-called powers, such as matter, disease, sin, and death, superior or contrary to the one Spirit.
