What Cannot God Do?

The following citations from the Bible and Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures were read during the September 16, 2009  Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, Ohio. After the readings, members of the congregation share related experiences of how God helps in times of trouble.

The Bible

I Cor 2:5 your
your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
Ps 147:5 (to :)
Great is our Lord, and of great power:

Isa 40:26
Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.

Ex 13:17 it,18 (to :)
it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea:

Ex 13:21,22
And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Ex 14:10,13,15,16,19-22,30 (to ;)

And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord.

And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me?  speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.  And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.  And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

Thus the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians;

I Chron 29:11,13

Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all.

Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.

Jer 10:10 the (to :),12,13
the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king:

He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.  When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.

II Tim 1:7 God
God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Josh 10:6 the,7-10 (to 1st ,),12,13 (to  2nd ,)

the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.  So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.  #And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.  Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.  And the Lord discomfited them before Israel,

Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed,

Josh 10:13 Is not this,14 (to 1st ,),15
Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.  And there was no day like that before it or after it,

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

Matt 9:35 Jesus
Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

John 6:16-21
And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea, And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum.  And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.  And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.  So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.  But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.  Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

Matt 17:20 If
If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Eph 6:10 my
my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Matt 6:13 For
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

131:10
The central fact of the Bible is the superiority of spiritual over physical power.

228:25-27
There is no power apart from God.  Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God.

139:4
From beginning to end, the Scriptures are full of accounts of the triumph of Spirit, Mind, over matter.  Moses proved the power of Mind by what men called miracles; so did Joshua, Elijah, and Elisha.  The Christian era was ushered in with signs and wonders.  Reforms have commonly been attended with bloodshed and persecution, even when the end has been brightness and peace; but the present new, yet old, reform in religious faith will teach men patiently and wisely to stem the tide of sectarian bitterness, whenever it flows inward.

134:28-10
There is divine authority for believing in the superiority of spiritual power over material resistance.
A miracle fulfils God's law, but does not violate that law.  This fact at present seems more mysterious than the miracle itself.  The Psalmist sang: "What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest?  Thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?  Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams, and ye little hills, like lambs?  Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob."  The miracle introduces no disorder, but unfolds the primal order, establishing the Science of God's unchangeable law.  Spiritual evolution alone is worthy of the exercise of divine power.

83:13
The scientific manifestation of power is from the divine nature and is not supernatural, since Science is an explication of nature.  The belief that the universe, including man, is governed in general by material laws, but that occasionally Spirit sets aside these laws,--this belief belittles omnipotent wisdom, and gives to matter the precedence over Spirit.

192:17-21
Moral and spiritual might belong to Spirit, who holds the "wind in His fists;" and this teaching accords with Science and harmony.  In Science, you can have no power opposed to God, and the physical senses must give up their false testimony.

84:19-23
To understand that Mind is infinite, not bounded by corporeality, not dependent upon the ear and eye for sound or sight nor upon muscles and bones for locomotion, is a step towards the Mind-science by which we discern man's nature and existence.

102:9-15
There is but one real attraction, that of Spirit.  The pointing of the needle to the pole symbolizes this all-embracing power or the attraction of God, divine Mind.
The planets have no more power over man than over his Maker, since God governs the universe; but man, reflecting God's power, has dominion over all the earth and its hosts.

111:6
Christian Science is natural, but not physical.  The Science of God and man is no more supernatural than is the science of numbers, though departing from the realm of the physical, as the Science of God, Spirit, must, some may deny its right to the name of Science.  The Principle of divine metaphysics is God; the practice of divine metaphysics is the utilization of the power of Truth over error; its rules demonstrate its Science.  Divine metaphysics reverses perverted and physical hypotheses as to Deity, even as the explanation of optics rejects the incidental or inverted image and shows what this inverted image is meant to represent.

120:7-9
Science reverses the false testimony of the physical senses, and by this reversal mortals arrive at the fundamental facts of being.

282:23
There is no inherent power in matter; for all that is material is a material, human, mortal thought, always governing itself erroneously.

270:5
Matter and Mind are opposites.  One is contrary to the other in its very nature and essence; hence both cannot be real.  If one is real, the other must be unreal.  Only by understanding that there is but one power,--not two powers, matter and Mind,--are scientific and logical conclusions reached.  Few deny the hypothesis that intelligence, apart from man and matter, governs the universe; and it is generally admitted that this intelligence is the eternal Mind or divine Principle, Love.

119:1-18,25-1
When we endow matter with vague spiritual power,--that is, when we do so in our theories, for of course we cannot really endow matter with what it does not and cannot possess,--we disown the Almighty, for such theories lead to one of two things.  They either presuppose the self-evolution and self-government of matter, or else they assume that matter is the product of Spirit.  To seize the first horn of this dilemma and consider matter as a power in and of itself, is to leave the creator out of His own universe; while to grasp the other horn of the dilemma and regard God as the creator of matter, is not only to make Him responsible for all disasters, physical and moral, but to announce Him as their source, thereby making Him guilty of maintaining perpetual misrule in the form and under the name of natural law.
In one sense God is identical with nature, but this nature is spiritual and is not expressed in matter.

In viewing the sunrise, one finds that it contradicts the evidence before the senses to believe that the earth is in motion and the sun at rest.  As astronomy reverses the human perception of the movement of the solar system, so Christian Science reverses the seeming relation of Soul and body and makes body tributary to Mind.  Thus it is with man, who is but the humble servant of the restful Mind, though it seems otherwise to finite sense.

182:32-4
The law of Christ, or Truth, makes all things possible to Spirit; but the so-called laws of matter would render Spirit of no avail, and demand obedience to materialistic codes, thus departing from the basis of one God, one lawmaker.

180:25-27
When man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God all things are possible.

209:5-30
Mind, supreme over all its formations and governing them all, is the central sun of its own systems of ideas, the life and light of all its own vast creation; and man is tributary to divine Mind.  The material and mortal body or mind is not the man.
The world would collapse without Mind, without the intelligence which holds the winds in its grasp.  Neither philosophy nor skepticism can hinder the march of the Science which reveals the supremacy of Mind.  The immanent sense of Mind-power enhances the glory of Mind.  Nearness, not distance, lends enchantment to this view.
The compounded minerals or aggregated substances composing the earth, the relations which constituent masses hold to each other, the magnitudes, distances, and revolutions of the celestial bodies, are of no real importance, when we remember that they all must give place to the spiritual fact by the translation of man and the universe back into Spirit.  In proportion as this is done, man and the universe will be found harmonious and eternal.
Material substances or mundane formations, astronomical calculations, and all the paraphernalia of speculative theories, based on the hypothesis of material law or life and intelligence resident in matter, will ultimately vanish, swallowed up in the infinite calculus of Spirit.

17:14
For God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All.
