Wednesday Readings: Violence

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the Feb. 29, 2012 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Isa 60:1, 2, 18 (to ;)
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.  For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders;

Pro 10:12
Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

Gen 4:1-7 (to 1st .), 8-10
And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.  And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.  And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.  And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.  And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?  If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door.

And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.  #And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?  And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

Gen 32:1, 2 (to :), 3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 16-18, 20 For he said
And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.  And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host:

And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.  Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.  And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?  Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.

For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.

Gen 33:1, 3, 4, 8-10
And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.

And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.  And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.  And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.  And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.

Gen 37:3-8, 11 (to ; ), 12, 13 (to 1st .), 17 And Joseph, 18, 23-28
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.  And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.  #And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.  And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.  And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

And his brethren envied him;

And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.  And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them.

And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.  And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.

And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.  And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.  And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?  Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.  Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

Luke 4:14, 15
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.  And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

Luke 17:1 (to ,), 3-6
Then said he unto the disciples,

Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.  And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent: thou shalt forgive him.  And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.  And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

Ps 37:1, 3 (to ;), 8-11
Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

Trust in the Lord, and do good;

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.  For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.  For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Matt 5:1, 2, 43-45 (to :)
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven:

Matt 5:4, 5, 9
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Luke 23:34 (to 1st .)
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
By Mary Baker Eddy

102:18-23, 30-2
The looms of crime, hidden in the dark recesses of mortal thought, are every hour weaving webs more complicated and subtle.  So secret are the present methods of animal magnetism that they ensnare the age into indolence, and produce the very apathy on the subject which the criminal desires.

  Mankind must learn that evil is not power.  Its so-called despotism is but a phase of nothingness.  Christian Science despoils the kingdom of evil, and pre-eminently promotes affection and virtue in families and therefore in the community.

103:6-31
  The destruction of the claims of mortal mind through Science, by which man can escape from sin and mortality, blesses the whole human family.  As in the beginning, however, this liberation does not scientifically show itself in a knowledge of both good and evil, for the latter is unreal.
  On the other hand, Mind-science is wholly separate from any half-way impertinent knowledge, because Mind-science is of God and demonstrates the divine Principle, working out the purposes of good only.  The maximum of good is the infinite God and His idea, the All-in-all.  Evil is a suppositional lie.
  As named in Christian Science, animal magnetism or hypnotism is the specific term for error, or mortal mind.  It is the false belief that mind is in matter, and is both evil and good; that evil is as real as good and more powerful.  This belief has not one quality of Truth.  It is either ignorant or malicious.  The malicious form of hypnotism ultimates in moral idiocy.  The truths of immortal Mind sustain man, and they annihilate the fables of mortal mind, whose flimsy and gaudy pretensions, like silly moths, singe their own wings and fall into dust.
  In reality there is no ^mortal^ mind, and consequently no transference of mortal thought and will-power.

104:13-18, 29-15
  Christian Science goes to the bottom of mental action, and reveals the theodicy which indicates the rightness of all divine action, as the emanation of divine Mind, and the consequent wrongness of the opposite so-called action,--evil, occultism, necromancy, mesmerism, animal magnetism, hypnotism.

  Our courts recognize evidence to prove the motive as well as the commission of a crime.  Is it not clear that the human mind must move the body to a wicked act?  Is not mortal mind the murderer?  The hands, without mortal mind to direct them, could not commit a murder.
  Courts and juries judge and sentence mortals in order to restrain crime, to prevent deeds of violence or to punish them.  To say that these tribunals have no jurisdiction over the carnal or mortal mind, would be to contradict precedent and to admit that the power of human law is restricted to matter, while mortal mind, evil, which is the real outlaw, defies justice and is recommended to mercy.  Can matter commit a crime?  Can matter be punished?  Can you separate the mentality from the body over which courts hold jurisdiction?  Mortal mind, not matter, is the criminal in every case; and human law rightly estimates crime, and courts reasonably pass sentence, according to the motive.

231:12-19, 30-8
  If God makes sin, if good produces evil, if truth results in error, then Science and Christianity are helpless; but there are no antagonistic powers nor laws, spiritual or material, creating and governing man through perpetual warfare.  God is not the author of mortal discords.  Therefore we accept the conclusion that discords have only a fabulous existence, are mortal beliefs which divine Truth and Love destroy.

  Man, governed by his Maker, having no other Mind,--planted on the Evangelist's statement that "all things were made by Him [the Word of God]; and without Him was not anything made that was made,"--can triumph over sin, sickness, and death.
  Many theories relative to God and man neither make man harmonious nor God lovable.  The beliefs we commonly entertain about happiness and life afford no scatheless and permanent evidence of either.  Security for the claims of harmonious and eternal being is found only in divine Science.

233:1, 16
Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power.  These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them.  This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil.

  Already the shadow of His right hand rests upon the hour.  Ye who can discern the face of the sky,--the sign material,--how much more should ye discern the sign mental, and compass the destruction of sin and sickness by overcoming the thoughts which produce them, and by understanding the spiritual idea which corrects and destroys them.  To reveal this truth was our Master's mission to all mankind, including the hearts which rejected him.

289:8
  A wicked mortal is not the idea of God.  He is little else than the expression of error.  To suppose that sin, lust, hatred, envy, hypocrisy, revenge, have life abiding in them, is a terrible mistake.  Life and Life's idea, Truth and Truth's idea, never make men sick, sinful, or mortal.

427:14-16, 22
Nothing can interfere with the harmony of being nor end the existence of man in Science.

God, Life, Truth, and Love make man undying.  Immortal Mind, governing all, must be acknowledged as supreme in the physical realm, so-called, as well as in the spiritual.

96:12-23, 31-4
This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces.  On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace.  The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases until their nothingness appears.  These disturbances will continue until the end of error, when all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth.
  Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization.  This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding.

  During this final conflict, wicked minds will endeavor to find means by which to accomplish more evil; but those who discern Christian Science will hold crime in check.  They will aid in the ejection of error.  They will maintain law and order, and cheerfully await the certainty of ultimate perfection.
