Wednesday Readings: Thy Will Be Done

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the May 11, 2011 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven
Enable us to know, - as in heaven, - so on earth, God is omnipotent, supreme
Matt 6:9 Our (to 1st ,),10 Thy will
Our Father which art in heaven,

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Ex. 19:1-9
In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.  For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.  And Moses went up unto God, and the Lord called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.  Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.  #And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him.  And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord.  And the Lord said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord.

Ex. 19:10 (to 1st ,)
And the Lord said unto Moses,

Ex. 19:11
And be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.

Ex. 20:1-4
And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  Thou shalt have no other gods before me.  Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Ex. 20:7-8
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.  Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Ex. 20:12-17 (to 1st covet)
#Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.  Thou shalt not kill.  Thou shalt not commit adultery.  Thou shalt not steal.  Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.  Thou shalt not covet

Ex. 20:18-22
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.  And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.  And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.  And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.  #And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

Ex. 20:23
Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

Deut. 28:1-6
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.  Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.  Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.  Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store.  Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

Gen. 22:17 1st in (to 1st ;)
in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore;

Ps 24:3-5
Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place?  He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.  He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Luke 19:1 Jesus
Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

Luke 6:6-10
And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.  And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.  But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.  Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?  And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

John 5:28 (to :),30
Marvel not at this:

I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

John 7:1-2,14,15,16,17,19
After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.  Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.

Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.  And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?  Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.  If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

Matt 26:1,2,17 (to bread), 20 when, 21,36-40
And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.

Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.  And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.  And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.  Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.  And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.  And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

John 6:38-40 I
I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.  And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.  And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Matt 12:50
For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Rom 12:1,2
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Ps 40:8
I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

S&H
SH 17:1-3
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
^Enable us to know,--as in heaven, so on earth,--God is^
    ^omnipotent, supreme.^

SH 193:32-2
It has been demonstrated to me that Life is God and that the might of omnipotent Spirit shares not its strength with matter or with human will.

SH 202:3
The scientific unity which exists between God and man must be wrought out in life-practice, and God's will must be universally done.

SH 597:20-21,24
WILL.  The motive-power of error; mortal belief; animal power.

Will, as a quality of so-called mortal mind, is a wrong-doer; hence it should not be confounded with the term as applied to Mind or to one of God's qualities.

SH 206:4
The power of the human will should be exercised only in subordination to Truth; else it will misguide the judgment and free the lower propensities.  It is the province of spiritual sense to govern man.  Material, erring, human thought acts injuriously both upon the body and through it.

SH 192:11-31
Erring power is a material belief, a blind miscalled force, the offspring of will and not of wisdom, of the mortal mind and not of the immortal.  It is the headlong cataract, the devouring flame, the tempest's breath.  It is lightning and hurricane, all that is selfish, wicked, dishonest, and impure.
Moral and spiritual might belong to Spirit, who holds the "wind in His fists;" and this teaching accords with Science and harmony.  In Science, you can have no power opposed to God, and the physical senses must give up their false testimony.  Your influence for good depends upon the weight you throw into the right scale.  The good you do and embody gives you the only power obtainable.  Evil is not power.  It is a mockery of strength, which erelong betrays its weakness and falls, never to rise.
We walk in the footsteps of Truth and Love by following the example of our Master in the understanding of divine metaphysics.  Christianity is the basis of true healing.  Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power.

SH 241:1-4 2nd He
He, who knows God's will or the demands of divine Science and obeys them, incurs the hostility of envy; and he who refuses obedience to God, is chastened by Love.

SH 490:3-11
Will-power is but a product of belief, and this belief commits depredations on harmony.  Human will is an animal propensity, not a faculty of Soul.  Hence it cannot govern man aright.  Christian Science reveals Truth and Love as the motive-powers of man.  Will--blind, stubborn, and headlong--cooperates with appetite and passion.  From this cooperation arises its evil.  From this also comes its powerlessness, since all power belongs to God, good.

SH 11:22-32
We know that a desire for holiness is requisite in order to gain holiness; but if we desire holiness above all else, we shall sacrifice everything for it.  We must be willing to do this, that we may walk securely in the only practical road to holiness.  Prayer cannot change the unalterable Truth, nor can prayer alone give us an understanding of Truth; but prayer, coupled with a fervent habitual desire to know and do the will of God, will bring us into all Truth.  Such a desire has little need of audible expression.

SH 446:24-27
Resisting evil, you overcome it and prove its nothingness.  Not human platitudes, but divine beatitudes, reflect the spiritual light and might which heal the sick.

SH 144:14-22
Human will-power is not Science.  Human will belongs to the so-called material senses, and its use is to be condemned.  Willing the sick to recover is not the metaphysical practice of Christian Science, but is sheer animal magnetism.  Human will-power may infringe the rights of man.  It produces evil continually, and is not a factor in the realism of being.  Truth, and not corporeal will, is the divine power which says to disease, "Peace, be still."

SH 367:31-32
Because Truth is omnipotent in goodness, error, Truth's opposite, has no might.

SH 451:19
Every Christian Scientist, every conscientious teacher of the Science of Mind-healing, knows that human will is not Christian Science, and he must recognize this in order to defend himself from the influence of human will. He feels morally obligated to open the eyes of his students that they may perceive the nature and methods of error of every sort, especially any subtle degree of evil, deceived and deceiving.  All mental malpractice arises from ignorance or malice aforethought.  It is the injurious action of one mortal mind controlling another from wrong motives, and it is practised either with a mistaken or a wicked purpose.

SH 442:30
Christian Scientists, be a law to yourselves that mental malpractice cannot harm you either when asleep or when awake.

SH 33:18-26
When the human element in him struggled with the divine, our great Teacher said: "Not my will, but Thine, be done!"--that is, Let not the flesh, but the Spirit, be represented in me.  This is the new understanding of spiritual Love.  It gives all for Christ, or Truth.  It blesses its enemies, heals the sick, casts out error, raises the dead from trespasses and sins, and preaches the gospel to the poor, the meek in heart.

SH 445:19
Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion of the divine energy in healing the sick.  Self-seeking, envy, passion, pride, hatred, and revenge are cast out by the divine Mind which heals disease.  The human will which maketh and worketh a lie, hiding the divine Principle of harmony, is destructive to health, and is the cause of disease rather than its cure.

SH 109:28
Jesus once said of his lessons: "My doctrine is not mine, but His that sent me.  If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself."  (John vii. 16, 17.)

SH 168:20
He did the will of the Father.  He healed sickness in defiance of what is called material law, but in accordance with God's law, the law of Mind.

597:22-23
"For this is the will of God."  (I Thessalonians iv. 3.)
