Wednesday Readings: Remember the Sabbath Day

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the Sept. 15, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Eccl 12:13 Fear
Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Gen 1:1,3,5,6,8,9,10 and God,11,12 and God,13
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.  And the evening and the morning were the first day.  #And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.  #And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.  And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

and God saw that it was good.  And the evening and the morning were the third day.

Gen 1:16,18 and God,19,21,23,25-27,31
And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

and God saw that it was good.  And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.  #And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Gen 2:1-3
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.  And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Ex 20:8-11
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Ex. 16:2 the,3 (to 1st ,),3 ye,11-12,13 and in, 14,15 (to 1st .),21-26,29
the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: And the children of Israel said unto them,

ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God.

and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.  And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground.  And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was.

And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.  #And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.  And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.  And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.  And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the Lord: to day ye shall not find it in the field.  Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

See, for that the Lord hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

(Matt. 12:1 Jesus,10-13,12 do well
Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.

And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days?  that they might accuse him.  And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?  How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.  Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 479:18-20
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep."

SH 502:24
The infinite has no beginning.  This word ^beginning^ is employed to signify ^the only^,--that is, the eternal verity and unity of God and man, including the universe.  The creative Principle--Life, Truth, and Love--is God.  The universe reflects God.  There is but one creator and one creation.  This creation consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities, which are embraced in the infinite Mind and forever reflected.  These ideas range from the infinitesimal to infinity, and the highest ideas are the sons and daughters of God.

SH 503:18-25 And
And God said, Let there be light:  and there was light.

Immortal and divine Mind presents the idea of God: ^first^, in light; ^second^, in reflection; ^third^, in spiritual and immortal forms of beauty and goodness.  But this Mind creates no element nor symbol of discord and decay.  God creates neither erring thought, mortal life, mutable truth, nor variable love.

SH 504:3-14 And

And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night.  And the evening and the morning were the first day.

All questions as to the divine creation being both spiritual and material are answered in this passage, for though solar beams are not yet included in the record of creation, still there is light.  This light is not from the sun nor from volcanic flames, but it is the revelation of Truth and of spiritual ideas.  This also shows that there is no place where God's light is not seen, since Truth, Life, and Love fill immensity and are ever-present.

SH 584:1-8
DAY.  The irradiance of Life; light, the spiritual idea of Truth and Love.
"And the evening and the morning were the first day." (Genesis i. 5.)  The objects of time and sense disappear in the illumination of spiritual understanding, and Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded.  This unfolding is God's day, and "there shall be no night there."

SH 501:10-13
The incarnation of Truth, that amplification of wonder and glory which angels could only whisper and which God illustrated by light and harmony, is consonant with ever-present Love.

SH 505:4-12 And
And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

Spiritual understanding, by which human conception, material sense, is separated from Truth, is the firmament.  The divine Mind, not matter, creates all identities, and they are forms of Mind, the ideas of Spirit apparent only as Mind, never as mindless matter nor the so-called material senses.

SH 506:8-14 And

And God called the firmament Heaven.  And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Through divine Science, Spirit, God, unites understanding to eternal harmony.  The calm and exalted thought or spiritual apprehension is at peace.  Thus the dawn of ideas goes on, forming each successive stage of progress.

SH 507:24-25,28-29; 508:26-4 And
Infinite Mind creates and governs all, from the mental molecule to infinity.

Creation is ever appearing, and must ever continue to appear from the nature of its inexhaustible source.

And the evening and the morning were the third day.

The third stage in the order of Christian Science is an important one to the human thought, letting in the light of spiritual understanding.  This period corresponds to the resurrection, when Spirit is discerned to be the Life of all, and the deathless Life, or Mind, dependent upon no material organization.

SH 510:13 And; 511:15 And; 510:27-6
And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night:  He made the stars also.

And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

Light is a symbol of Mind, of Life, Truth, and Love, and not a vitalizing property of matter.  Science reveals only one Mind, and this one shining by its own light and governing the universe, including man, in perfect harmony.  This Mind forms ideas, its own images, subdivides and radiates their borrowed light, intelligence, and so explains the Scripture phrase, "whose seed is in itself."  Thus God's ideas "multiply and replenish the earth."  The divine Mind supports the sublimity, magnitude, and infinitude of spiritual creation.

512:4 And
And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind:  and God saw that it was good.

SH 511:23; 512:20-21
To mortal mind, the universe is liquid, solid, and aeriform.  Spiritually interpreted, rocks and mountains stand for solid and grand ideas.  Animals and mortals metaphorically present the gradation of mortal thought, rising in the scale of intelligence, taking form in masculine, feminine, or neuter gender.  The fowls, which fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven, correspond to aspirations soaring beyond and above corporeality to the understanding of the incorporeal and divine Principle, Love.

Spirit blesses the multiplication of its own pure and perfect ideas.

SH 514:7,28

Mind's infinite ideas run and disport themselves.  In humility they climb the heights of holiness.

All of God's creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible.  A realization of this grand verity was a source of strength to the ancient worthies.  It supports Christian healing, and enables its possessor to emulate the example of Jesus.  "And God saw that it was good."

SH 513:4-13 And

And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

Advancing spiritual steps in the teeming universe of Mind lead on to spiritual spheres and exalted beings.  To material sense, this divine universe is dim and distant, gray in the sombre hues of twilight; but anon the veil is lifted, and the scene shifts into light.  In the record, time is not yet measured by solar revolutions, and the motions and reflections of deific power cannot be apprehended until divine Science becomes the interpreter.

SH 515:11 And,21-24 Man

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Man is the family name for all ideas,--the sons and daughters of God.  All that God imparts moves in accord with Him, reflecting goodness and power.

SH 515:25-26 (to 2nd .); 516:2
Your mirrored reflection is your own image or likeness.  If you lift a weight, your reflection does this also.

As the reflection of yourself appears in the mirror, so you, being spiritual, are the reflection of God.  The substance, Life, intelligence, Truth, and Love, which constitute Deity, are reflected by His creation; and when we subordinate the false testimony of the corporeal senses to the facts of Science, we shall see this true likeness and reflection everywhere.

SH 516:9-12

God fashions all things, after His own likeness.  Life is reflected in existence, Truth in truthfulness, God in goodness, which impart their own peace and permanence.

SH 518:24 And; 519:3-6 Deity
And God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.  And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Deity was satisfied with His work.  How could He be otherwise, since the spiritual creation was the outgrowth, the emanation, of His infinite self-containment and immortal wisdom?

SH 519:7-11 Thus
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

Thus the ideas of God in universal being are complete and forever expressed, for Science reveals infinity and the fatherhood and motherhood of Love.

SH 519:22-2 And

And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.

God rests in action.  Imparting has not impoverished, can never impoverish, the divine Mind.  No exhaustion follows the action of this Mind, according to the apprehension of divine Science.  The highest and sweetest rest, even from a human standpoint, is in holy work.

SH 3:9

His work is done, and we have only to avail ourselves of God's rule in order to receive His blessing, which enables us to work out our own salvation.

520:3-5 (to !)

Unfathomable Mind is expressed.  The depth, breadth, height, might, majesty, and glory of infinite Love fill all space.  That is enough!

SH 143:27-31
If Mind was first chronologically, is first potentially, and must be first eternally, then give to Mind the glory, honor, dominion, and power everlastingly due its holy name.

SH 483:27-30

And Christian Science does honor God as no other theory honors Him, and it does this in the way of His appointing, by doing many wonderful works through the divine name and nature.

Hymn 73
Hymn 1:1
