Wednesday Readings: Recession

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the July 14, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Hag 1:5 thus,6,7,9 (to ;)
thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways.  Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.  #Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways.

Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little;

Num 11:1 when (to :),2 (to ;),4 2nd and,5-11,13,31,32
when the people complained, it displeased the Lord:

And the people cried unto Moses; and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?  We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.  And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.  And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.  And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.  Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.  And Moses said unto the Lord, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?

Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.

And there went forth a wind from the Lord, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.  And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

John 6:37
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

II Kings 4:1-6
Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.  And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.  Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.  And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.  So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.  And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

Isa 1:18 (to :)
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord:

Prov. 1:10-11 (to 1st ,),13-15,16 (to 1st ,),19 (to ;)
My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.  If they say,

We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil,

So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain;

Prov. 15:27 (to ;)
He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house;

Prov. 28:8 (to ,),9 (to 1st ,),10
He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance,

He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law,

Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession.

Isa. 33:15-16
He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.

Isa. 33:21-22 there
there the glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby.  For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.

Rev 22:2 on
on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Josh. 1:7-8 be
be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.  This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

John 21:6 Cast (to 1st .)
Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 133:9-10,13-15
In the wilderness, streams flowed from the rock, and manna fell from the sky.

In national prosperity, miracles attended the successes of the Hebrews; but when they departed from the true idea, their demoralization began.

SH vii:15-17,20
Contentment with the past and the cold conventionality of materialism are crumbling away.

Though empires fall, "the Lord shall reign forever."

SH 351:27-29
The Israelites centred their thoughts on the material in their attempted worship of the spiritual.  To them matter was substance, and Spirit was shadow.

SH 325:32
A false sense of life, substance, and mind hides the divine possibilities, and conceals scientific demonstration.

SH 278:32-3
Which ought to be substance to us,--the erring, changing, and dying, the mutable and mortal, or the unerring, immutable, and immortal?

SH 349:31-4
In Christian Science, substance is understood to be Spirit, while the opponents of Christian Science believe substance to be matter.  They think of matter as something and almost the only thing, and of the things which pertain to Spirit as next to nothing, or as very far removed from daily experience.

SH 477:22-24
Soul is the substance, Life, and intelligence of man, which is individualized, but not in matter.

SH 60:29-61:1
Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul.  Higher enjoyments alone can satisfy the cravings of immortal man.

SH 122:1-7
The evidence of the physical senses often reverses the real Science of being, and so creates a reign of discord,--assigning seeming power to sin, sickness, and death; but the great facts of Life, rightly understood, defeat this triad of errors, contradict their false witnesses, and reveal the kingdom of heaven,--the actual reign of harmony on earth.

SH 268:1-9
In the material world, thought has brought to light with great rapidity many useful wonders.  With like activity have thought's swift pinions been rising towards the realm of the real, to the spiritual cause of those lower things which give impulse to inquiry.  Belief in a material basis, from which may be deduced all rationality, is slowly yielding to the idea of a metaphysical basis, looking away from matter to Mind as the cause of every effect.

SH 241:9-11
Falsehood, envy, hypocrisy, malice, hate, revenge, and so forth, steal away the treasures of Truth.

SH 201:7
We cannot build safely on false foundations.  Truth makes a new creature, in whom old things pass away and "all things are become new."  Passions, selfishness, false appetites, hatred, fear, all sensuality, yield to spirit-uality, and the superabundance of being is on the side of God, good.

SH 99:2-5
Human philosophy, ethics, and superstition afford no demonstrable divine Principle by which mortals can escape from sin; yet to escape from sin, is what the Bible demands.

SH 406:11-12
The Science of being unveils the errors of sense, and spiritual perception, aided by Science, reaches Truth.

SH 186:17-24
Evil is self-assertive.  It says: "I am a real entity, overmastering good."  This falsehood should strip evil of all pretensions.  The only power of evil is to destroy itself.  It can never destroy one iota of good. Every attempt of evil to destroy good is a failure, and only aids in peremptorily punishing the evil-doer.  If we concede the same reality to discord as to harmony, discord has as lasting a claim upon us as has harmony.

SH 225:25
The despotic tendencies, inherent in mortal mind and always germinating in new forms of tyranny, must be rooted out through the action of the divine Mind.

SH 72:21-23
God, good, being ever present, it follows in divine logic that evil, the suppositional opposite of good, is never present.

SH 327:1, 9-10
Reform comes by understanding that there is no abiding pleasure in evil, and also by gaining an affection for good according to Science, which reveals the immortal fact that neither pleasure nor pain, appetite nor passion, can exist in or of matter, while divine Mind can and does destroy the false beliefs of pleasure, pain, or fear and all the sinful appetites of the human mind.

Evil is sometimes a man's highest conception of right, until his grasp on good grows stronger.

SH 393:12-18
Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good.  God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man.
Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government.

SH 561:1
The understanding of Truth and Love, the Principle which works out the ends of eternal good and destroys both faith in evil and the practice of evil, leads to the discernment of the divine idea.

34:18-20,21-23
Through all the disciples experienced, they became more spiritual and understood better what the Master had taught.

It helped them to raise themselves and others from spiritual dulness and blind belief in God into the perception of infinite possibilities.

SH 35:2
Convinced of the fruitlessness of their toil in the dark and wakened by their Master's voice, they changed their methods, turned away from material things, and cast their net on the right side.  Discerning Christ, Truth, anew on the shore of time, they were enabled to rise somewhat from mortal sensuousness, or the burial of mind in matter, into newness of life as Spirit.

SH 61:4-11
The good in human affections must have ascendency over the evil and the spiritual over the animal, or happiness will never be won.  The attainment of this celestial condition would improve our progeny, diminish crime, and give higher aims to ambition.  Every valley of sin must be exalted, and every mountain of selfishness be brought low, that the highway of our God may be prepared in Science.

SH 327:17
To the physical senses, the strict demands of Christian Science seem peremptory; but mortals are hastening to learn that Life is God, good, and that evil has in reality neither place nor power in the human or the divine economy.

513:6-10
Advancing spiritual steps in the teeming universe of Mind lead on to spiritual spheres and exalted beings.  To material sense, this divine universe is dim and distant, gray in the sombre hues of twilight; but anon the veil is lifted, and the scene shifts into light.
