Wednesday Readings: Protection

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the July 15, 2011 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Ps 91:1-10 (to 1st ,)
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.  Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.  He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.  Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.  A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.  Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.  Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee,

Ps. 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Ps. 79:9
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.

II Kings 18:1-2 (to 1st .),3,4 (to 3rd ,),5,6,7,13
Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.  Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem.

And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that David his father did.  #He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves,

He trusted in the Lord God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.  For he clave to the Lord, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses.  And the Lord was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.

II Kings 18:17 (to 1st .)
And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem.

II Kings 18:19,20 on,28-32
And Rabshakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria: Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand: Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.  Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern: Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The Lord will deliver us.

II Chron. 32:17
He wrote also letters to rail on the Lord God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.

II Kings 19:1,15,16,19,20 (to 3rd ,), 6 be, 20 That ,32 the king,33,34,36
And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.

And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said, O Lord God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.  Lord, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, Lord, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.

Now therefore, O Lord our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord God, even thou only.  #Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel,

Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.

the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.  By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the Lord.  For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.

Ezra 8:31 1st the hand
the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.

I Chron. 16:34-36
O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.  And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.  Blessed be the Lord God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the Lord.

Ps. 61:1 O (to ;)
O God;

Ps. 61:3-4 thou (to 1st .),5 (to :),8 (to 1st ,)
thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.  I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings.

For thou, O God, hast heard my vows:

So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever,

Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures

SH 445:21-24
Self-seeking, envy, passion, pride, hatred, and revenge are cast out by the divine Mind which heals disease.

SH 151:23-24,26
The divine Mind that made man maintains His own image and likeness.

All that really exists is the divine Mind and its idea, and in this Mind the entire being is found harmonious and eternal.  The straight and narrow way is to see and acknowledge this fact, yield to this power, and follow the leadings of truth.

SH 387:27
The history of Christianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on man by his heavenly Father, omnipotent Mind, who gives man faith and understanding whereby to defend himself, not only from temptation, but from bodily suffering.

SH 571:18-19
Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you.

SH 43:32 (only)
  Love must triumph over hate.

SH 454:9
Human hate has no legitimate mandate and no kingdom.  Love is enthroned.  That evil or matter has neither intelligence nor power, is the doctrine of absolute Christian Science, and this is the great truth which strips all disguise from error.

SH 97:22
It requires courage to utter truth; for the higher Truth lifts her voice, the louder will error scream, until its inarticulate sound is forever silenced in oblivion.

SH 231:20-25
To hold yourself superior to sin, because God made you superior to it and governs man, is true wisdom.  To fear sin is to misunderstand the power of Love and the divine Science of being in man's relation to God,--to doubt His government and distrust His omnipotent care.

SH 419:25-28
Never fear the mental malpractitioner, the mental assassin, who, in attempting to rule mankind, tramples upon the divine Principle of metaphysics, for God is the only power.

SH 234:31-3
Evil thoughts and aims reach no farther and do no more harm than one's belief permits.  Evil thoughts, lusts, and malicious purposes cannot go forth, like wandering pollen, from one human mind to another, finding unsuspected lodgment, if virtue and truth build a strong defence.

SH 450:27-2
Who, that has felt the perilous beliefs in life, substance, and intelligence separated from God, can say that there is no error of belief?  Knowing the claim of animal magnetism, that all evil combines in the belief of life, substance, and intelligence in matter, electricity, animal nature, and organic life, who will deny that these are the errors which Truth must and will annihilate?

SH 339:2-3
Divine Life destroys death, Truth destroys error, and Love destroys hate.

SH 446:20-25
To understand God strengthens hope, enthrones faith in Truth, and verifies Jesus' word: "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world."
Resisting evil, you overcome it and prove its nothingness.

Mankind must learn that evil is not power.  Its so-called despotism is but a phase of nothingness.  Christian Science despoils the kingdom of evil, and pre-eminently promotes affection and virtue in families and therefore in the community.  The Apostle Paul refers to the personification of evil as "the god of this world," and further defines it as dishonesty and craftiness.  Sin was the Assyrian moon-god.
The destruction of the claims of mortal mind through Science, by which man can escape from sin and mortality, blesses the whole human family.  As in the beginning, however, this liberation does not scientifically show itself in a knowledge of both good and evil, for the latter is unreal.

SH 94:14
Tyranny, intolerance, and bloodshed, wherever found, arise from the belief that the infinite is formed after the pattern of mortal personality, passion, and impulse.

SH 446:29-30
This must therefore be watched and guarded against.

SH 243:25
Truth has no consciousness of error.  Love has no sense of hatred.  Life has no partnership with death.  Truth, Life, and Love are a law of annihilation to everything unlike themselves, because they declare nothing except God.

SH 471:18-19
God is infinite, therefore ever present, and there is no other power nor presence.

SH 207:9-13
We must learn that evil is the awful deception and unreality of existence.  Evil is not supreme; good is not helpless; nor are the so-called laws of matter primary, and the law of Spirit secondary.

SH 571:16-18
Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil.

SH 336:25-26 God
God, the divine Principle of man, and man in God's likeness are inseparable, harmonious, and eternal.

SH 91:5-7
Let us rid ourselves of the belief that man is separated from God, and obey only the divine Principle, Life and Love.

SH 15:20-21
We must "pray without ceasing."

SH 9:32 (only)
Consistent prayer is the desire to do right.

SH 10:1
Prayer means that we desire to walk and will walk in the light so far as we receive it, even though with bleeding footsteps, and that waiting patiently on the Lord, we will leave our real desires to be rewarded by Him.

SH 261:4
Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts.

SH 495:28-31
Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love.

SH 436:13
Such acts bear their own justification, and are under the protection of the Most High.
