Wednesday Readings: Daily Prayer for Ourselves

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the August 17, 2011 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

II Chron. 6:17 (to 2nd ,)
Now then, O Lord God of Israel,

II Chron. 6:19-20
Have respect therefore to the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O Lord my God, to hearken unto the cry and the prayer which thy servant prayeth before thee: That thine eyes may be open upon this house day and night, upon the place whereof thou hast said that thou wouldest put thy name there; to hearken unto the prayer which thy servant prayeth toward this place.

Dan. 6:1-12 (to ;),13 That, 16,19-23,25-27
It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.  Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.  #Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.  Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.  Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.  All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellers, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.  Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.  Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.  #Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.  Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.  Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's decree;

That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.

Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.

Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.  And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?  Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.  My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.  Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.

Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.  I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.  He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

Matt. 6:9 (to :)
After this manner therefore pray ye:

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

By Mary Baker Eddy

SH 243:4-8
The divine Love, which made harmless the poisonous viper, which delivered men from the boiling oil, from the fiery furnace, from the jaws of the lion, can heal the sick in every age and triumph over sin and death.

SH 243:13
That those wonders are not more commonly repeated to-day, arises not so much from lack of desire as from lack of spiritual growth.

SH 283:27
We must receive the divine Principle in the understanding, and live it in daily life; and unless we so do, we can no more demonstrate Science, than we can teach and illustrate geometry by calling a curve a straight line or a straight line a sphere.

SH 4:18-22 the
the longing to be better and holier, expressed in daily watchfulness and in striving to assimilate more of the divine character, will mould and fashion us anew, until we awake in His likeness.

SH 272:19
It is the spiritualization of thought and Christianization of daily life, in contrast with the results of the ghastly farce of material existence; it is chastity and purity, in contrast with the downward tendencies and earthward gravitation of sensualism and impurity, which really attest the divine origin and operation of Christian Science.  The triumphs of Christian Science are recorded in the destruction of error and evil, from which are propagated the dismal beliefs of sin, sickness, and death.

SH 16:7-11,20
Our Master taught his disciples one brief prayer, which we name after him the Lord's Prayer.  Our Master said, "After this manner therefore pray ye," and then he gave that prayer which covers all human needs.

Only as we rise above all material sensuousness and sin, can we reach the heaven-born aspiration and spiritual consciousness, which is indicated in the Lord's Prayer and which instantaneously heals the sick.

S&H 16:24
Here let me give what I understand to be the spiritual sense of the Lord's Prayer:

Our Father which art in heaven,
  ^Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious,^

Hallowed be Thy name.

SH 465:9-10 God
God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love.

SH 532:3 God
God makes and governs all.

SH 294:27
God created man.

SH 172:23-24
What is man?  Brain, heart, blood, bones, etc., the material structure?

SH 591:5
MAN.  The compound idea of infinite Spirit; the spiritual image and likeness of God; the full representation of Mind.

SH 468:9-15 There
There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter.  All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all.  Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error.  Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal.  Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness.  Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual.

SH 475:6-477:18 Man
Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements.  The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God.  Matter is not that likeness.  The likeness of Spirit cannot be so unlike Spirit.  Man is spiritual and perfect; and because he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood in Christian Science.  Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique.  He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas; the generic term for all that reflects God's image and likeness; the conscious identity of being as found in Science, in which man is the reflection of God, or Mind, and therefore is eternal; that which has no separate mind from God; that which has not a single quality underived from Deity; that which possesses no life, intelligence, nor creative power of his own, but reflects spiritually all that belongs to his Maker.
And God said: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."
Man is incapable of sin, sickness, and death.  The real man cannot depart from holiness, nor can God, by whom man is evolved, engender the capacity or freedom to sin.  A mortal sinner is not God's man.  Mortals are the counterfeits of immortals.  They are the children of the wicked one, or the one evil, which declares that man begins in dust or as a material embryo.  In divine Science, God and the real man are inseparable as divine Principle and idea.
Error, urged to its final limits, is self-destroyed.  Error will cease to claim that soul is in body, that life and intelligence are in matter, and that this matter is man.  God is the Principle of man, and man is the idea of God.  Hence man is not mortal nor material.  Mortals will disappear, and immortals, or the children of God, will appear as the only and eternal verities of man.  Mortals are not fallen children of God.  They never had a perfect state of being, which may subsequently be regained.  They were, from the beginning of mortal history, "conceived in sin and brought forth in iniquity."  Mortality is finally swallowed up in immortality.  Sin, sickness, and death must disappear to give place to the facts which belong to immortal man.
Learn this, O mortal, and earnestly seek the spiritual status of man, which is outside of all material selfhood.  Remember that the Scriptures say of mortal man: "As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.  For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more."
When speaking of God's children, not the children of men, Jesus said, "The kingdom of God is within you;" that is, Truth and Love reign in the real man, showing that man in God's image is unfallen and eternal.  Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals.  In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.  Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy.  Man is not a material habitation for Soul; he is himself spiritual.  Soul, being Spirit, is seen in nothing imperfect nor material.
Whatever is material is mortal.  To the five corporeal senses, man appears to be matter and mind united; but Christian Science reveals man as the idea of God, and declares the corporeal senses to be mortal and erring illusions.  Divine Science shows it to be impossible that a material body, though interwoven with matter's highest stratum, misnamed mind, should be man,--the genuine and perfect man, the immortal idea of being, indestructible and eternal.  Were it otherwise, man would be annihilated.

SH 302:14
Continuing our definition of ^man^, let us remember that harmonious and immortal man has existed forever, and is always beyond and above the mortal illusion of any life, substance, and intelligence as existent in matter.  This statement is based on fact, not fable.  The Science of being reveals man as perfect, even as the Father is perfect, because the Soul, or Mind, of the spiritual man is God, the divine Principle of all being, and because this real man is governed by Soul instead of sense, by the law of Spirit, not by the so-called laws of matter.

SH 63:5
In Science man is the offspring of Spirit.  The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry.  His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor does he pass through material conditions prior to reaching intelligence.  Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being.

SH 200:16
The great truth in the Science of being, that the real man was, is, and ever shall be perfect, is incontrovertible; for if man is the image, reflection, of God, he is neither inverted nor subverted, but upright and Godlike.

SH 466:13
Truth is immortal; error is mortal.  Truth is limitless; error is limited.  Truth is intelligent; error is non-intelligent.  Moreover, Truth is real, and error is unreal.  This last statement contains the point you will most reluctantly admit, although first and last it is the most important to understand.

SH 21:1-4
If Truth is overcoming error in your daily walk and conversation, you can finally say, "I have fought a good fight . . . I have kept the faith," because you are a better man.

SH 138:18-22
Christians are under as direct orders now, as they were then, to be Christlike, to possess the Christ-spirit, to follow the Christ-example, and to heal the sick as well as the sinning.

SH 458:23-24
The Christianly scientific man reflects the divine law, thus becoming a law unto himself.

SH 442:30
Christian Scientists, be a law to yourselves that mental malpractice cannot harm you either when asleep or when awake.

SH 571:18-19
Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you.

442:16-19
Neither animal magnetism nor hypnotism enters into the practice of Christian Science, in which truth cannot be reversed, but the reverse of error is true.  An improved belief cannot retrograde.

SH 496:15-19
Hold perpetually this thought,--that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being.

SH 2:4
Are we benefited by praying?  Yes, the desire which goes forth hungering after righteousness is blessed of our Father, and it does not return unto us void.

SH 178:32
Whoever reaches the understanding of Christian Science in its proper signification will perform the sudden cures of which it is capable; but this can be done only by taking up the cross and following Christ in the daily life.
