Wednesday Readings: Post Traumatic Stress

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the January 19, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Jer. 39:1,4-5 (to Babylon),5 where,8
In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, came Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and all his army against Jerusalem, and they besieged it.

And it came to pass, that when Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all the men of war, then they fled, and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king's garden, by the gate betwixt the two walls: and he went out the way of the plain.  But the Chaldeans' army pursued after them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho: and when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon where he gave judgment upon him.

And the Chaldeans burned the king's house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and brake down the walls of Jerusalem.

Zech. 1:18 (to behold)

Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold

Ps. 77:4-5 (to 1st ,),6-8
Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.  I have considered the days of old,

I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.  Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?  Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?

Job 3:3 (to 1st ,),5, 11 (to 1st not),20-22,25 the,26

Let the day perish wherein I was born,

Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

Why died I not

Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures; Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.  I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

Job 4:13-14
In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men, Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.

Ps. 69:20

Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

Job 7:21
And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

Romans 13:11 now (to :)
now it is high time to awake out of sleep:

II Tim. 1:7 God
God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Jer. 39:16 Thus (to 1st ;),17 I
Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel;

I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid.

Isa. 43:1-3 thus (to :),18-19 (to 2nd ;)

thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.  When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.  For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour:

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.  Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth;

Isaiah 41:10-11 (to ;),13 I

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.  Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing;

I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

Isaiah 60:4 (to :)
Lift up thine eyes round about, and see:

Isa 40:21 (to you), 28 that (to God),29

Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you
that the everlasting God

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

Matt. 11:7 Jesus (to multitudes),28,29

Jesus began to say unto the multitudes

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Eph 6:10 be

be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Luke 8:22,26, 27, 28 (to 3rd ,), 30-32, 38, 39
Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.

And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.  And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.  When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him,

And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.  And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.  And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.

Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying, Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.

Isaiah 59:1

Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

Romans 8:18 I, 24 (to :), 26 (to :),31, 35,37-39

I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

For we are saved by hope:

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities:

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Rev. 12:9 the,10 (to :)
the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.  And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ:

Rev. 21:1,2,4,7

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.  And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 565:23-24
After the stars sang together and all was primeval harmony, the material lie made war upon the spiritual idea;

SH 188:8
Passion, depraved appetites, dishonesty, envy, hatred, revenge ripen into action, only to pass from shame and woe to their final punishment.

SH 574:27-30
The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares.

SH 567:3 (only)
These angels deliver us from the depths.

332:9-11 Christ
Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness.

335:25-29

XX.  Mind is the divine Principle, Love, and can produce nothing unlike the eternal Father-Mother, God.  Reality is spiritual, harmonious, immutable, immortal, divine, eternal.  Nothing unspiritual can be real, harmonious, or eternal.

336:25-28
XXIV.  God, the divine Principle of man, and man in God's likeness are inseparable, harmonious, and eternal.  The Science of being furnishes the rule of perfection, and brings immortality to light.

255:3-6
"Let there be light," is the perpetual demand of Truth and Love, changing chaos into order and discord into the music of the spheres.

SH 479:23-25 (to ,)
Darkness and chaos are the imaginary opposites of light, understanding, and eternal harmony,

SH 14:12-15
Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,--neither in nor of matter,--and the body will then utter no complaints.

SH 475:6-7 Man,14-15 (to ;),28-29 The (to ,)
Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements.

He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas;

The real man cannot depart from holiness,

SH 336:14
The spiritual man's consciousness and individuality are reflections of God. They are the emanations of Him who is Life, Truth, and Love.  Immortal man is not and never was material, but always spiritual and eternal.

SH 122:1-7
The evidence of the physical senses often reverses the real Science of being, and so creates a reign of discord,--assigning seeming power to sin, sickness, and death; but the great facts of Life, rightly understood, defeat this triad of errors, contradict their false witnesses, and reveal the kingdom of heaven,--the actual reign of harmony on earth.

SH 231:12
If God makes sin, if good produces evil, if truth results in error, then Science and Christianity are helpless; but there are no antagonistic powers nor laws, spiritual or material, creating and governing man through perpetual warfare.  God is not the author of mortal discords.  Therefore we accept the conclusion that discords have only a fabulous existence, are mortal beliefs which divine Truth and Love destroy.

SH 186:22-24
If we concede the same reality to discord as to harmony, discord has as lasting a claim upon us as has harmony.

SH 276:15
Discord is unreal and mortal.

SH 493:22
Christian Science takes away this physical sense of discord, just as it removes any other sense of moral or mental inharmony.  That man is material, and that matter suffers,--these propositions can only seem real and natural in illusion.  Any sense of soul in matter is not the reality of being.

SH 184:8-12
The remedy consists in probing the trouble to the bottom, in finding and casting out by denial the error of belief which produces a mortal disorder, never honoring erroneous belief with the title of law nor yielding obedience to it.

SH 218:32-219:2
When we wake to the truth of being, all disease, pain, weakness, weariness, sorrow, sin, death, will be unknown, and the mortal dream will forever cease.

SH 215:12-18
Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life.
We are sometimes led to believe that darkness is as real as light; but Science affirms darkness to be only a mortal sense of the absence of light, at the coming of which darkness loses the appearance of reality.

SH 353:18-24
All things will continue to disappear, until perfection appears and reality is reached.  We must give up the spectral at all points.  We must not continue to admit the somethingness of superstition, but we must yield up all belief in it and be wise.  When we learn that error is not real, we shall be ready for progress, "forgetting those things which are behind."

194:17-18,22-25 (to babe),30-2
The authentic history of Kaspar Hauser is a useful hint as to the frailty and inadequacy of mortal mind.

Incarcerated in a dungeon, where neither sight nor sound could reach him, at the age of seventeen Kaspar was still a mental infant, crying and chattering with no more intelligence than a babe

His case proves material sense to be but a belief formed by education alone.  The light which affords us joy gave him a belief of intense pain.  His eyes were inflamed by the light.

SH 194:6-9
A change in human belief changes all the physical symptoms, and determines a case for better or for worse.  When one's false belief is corrected, Truth sends a report of health over the body.

403:14-20
You command the situation if you understand that mortal existence is a state of self-deception and not the truth of being.  Mortal mind is constantly producing on mortal body the results of false opinions; and it will continue to do so, until mortal error is deprived of its imaginary powers by Truth, which sweeps away the gossamer web of mortal illusion.

373:19-21
The fear occasioned by ignorance can be cured; but to remove the effects of fear produced by sin, you must rise above both fear and sin.

SH 390:32-391:4
Rise in the conscious strength of the spirit of Truth to overthrow the plea of mortal mind, ^alias^ matter, arrayed against the supremacy of Spirit.  Blot out the images of mortal thought and its beliefs in sickness and sin.

372:1-2
Remember, brain is not mind.  Matter cannot be sick, and Mind is immortal.

SH 409:16-19

The so-called conscious mortal mind is believed to be superior to its unconscious substratum, matter, and the stronger never yields to the weaker, except through fear or choice.

372:14-17
When man demonstrates Christian Science absolutely, he will be perfect.  He can neither sin, suffer, be subject to matter, nor disobey the law of God.  Therefore he will be as the angels in heaven.

SH 328:2
Then he not only will be saved, but ^is^ saved.

SH 567:18-23
That false claim--that ancient belief, that old serpent whose name is devil (evil), claiming that there is intelligence in matter either to benefit or to injure men--is pure delusion, the red dragon; and it is cast out by Christ, Truth, the spiritual idea, and so proved to be powerless.

SH 570:18-21
What if the old dragon should send forth a new flood to drown the Christ-idea?  He can neither drown your voice with its roar, nor again sink the world into the deep waters of chaos and old night.

SH 410:14

Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger.  The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love.  The Apostle John says: "There is no fear in Love, but perfect Love casteth out fear. . . . He that feareth is not made perfect in Love."  Here is a definite and inspired proclamation of Christian Science.

SH 467:9-13
It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love.  Mankind will become perfect in proportion as this fact becomes apparent, war will cease and the true brotherhood of man will be established.

SH 573:29
Take heart, dear sufferer, for this reality of being will surely appear sometime and in some way.  There will be no more pain, and all tears will be wiped away.  When you read this, remember Jesus' words, "The kingdom of God is within you."  This spiritual consciousness is therefore a present possibility.
