There is No Intelligence in Matter

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the Nov. December 8, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Philem. 1:14 without (to ;)
without thy mind would I do nothing;

Proverbs 3:13,14
Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.  For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

I Kings 3:5-13
In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.  And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.  And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.  And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.  Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?  And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.  And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.  And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.

Prov 8:1,4,14,20,21,32,33
Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?

Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.

Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.

I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment: That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.

Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.  Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.

Dan 2:1,16,19-20,22,23,24 (to 1st ,),24 he (to ;),24 bring,25,26-28,29,30,45
And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him.

Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation.

Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.  Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.  I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.  Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch,

he went and said thus unto him;

bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.  Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.  The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?  Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king; But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days.  Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these; As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass.  But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.

Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

Dan 2:46 (to 1st ,),47-48
Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face,

The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.  Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.

Phil. 1:27 stand (to mind)
stand fast in one spirit, with one mind

Prov 4:5-8,13
Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.  Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.  Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.  Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.

Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

Matt. 2:1 (to 2nd ,)
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold,

Luke 2:40-47 the,52
the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.  Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.  And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.  And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.  But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.  And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.  And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.  And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Phil. 2:5
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Science and Health with key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 478:14-15 Does
Does brain think, and do nerves feel, and is there intelligence in matter?

SH 9:26 (only)
No!

SH 469:8 Intelligence
Intelligence is omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence.  It is the primal and eternal quality of infinite Mind, of the triune Principle,--Life, Truth, and Love,--named God.

478:20-23
How can intelligence dwell in matter when matter is non-intelligent and brain-lobes cannot think?  Matter cannot perform the functions of Mind.

SH 191:1-7
The brain can give no idea of God's man.  It can take no cognizance of Mind.  Matter is not the organ of infinite Mind.
As mortals give up the delusion that there is more than one Mind, more than one God, man in God's likeness will appear, and this eternal man will include in that likeness no material element.

SH 73:26-29
It is a grave mistake to suppose that matter is any part of the reality of intelligent existence, or that Spirit and matter, intelligence and non-intelligence, can commune together.

SH 189:27
According to mortal thought, the development of embryonic mortal mind commences in the lower, basal portion of the brain, and goes on in an ascending scale by evolution, keeping always in the direct line of matter, for matter is the subjective condition of mortal mind.

SH 91:22-92:2;92:9-10
Certain erroneous postulates should be here considered in order that the spiritual facts may be better apprehended.
The first erroneous postulate of belief is, that substance, life, and intelligence are something apart from God.
The second erroneous postulate is, that man is both mental and material.    The third erroneous postulate is, that mind is both evil and good; whereas the real Mind cannot be evil nor the medium of evil, for Mind is God.
The fourth erroneous postulate is, that matter is intelligent, and that man has a material body which is part of himself.

Mind is not an entity within the cranium with the power of sinning now and forever.

SH 262:28-30 Every
Every concept which seems to begin with the brain begins falsely.

SH 372:1 (only)
  Remember, brain is not mind.

SH 192:1
The belief that a pulpy substance under the skull is mind is a mockery of intelligence, a mimicry of Mind.

SH 259:24-25
Brain or matter never formed a human concept.

SH 165:6
To measure intellectual capacity by the size of the brain and strength by the exercise of muscle, is to subjugate intelligence, to make mind mortal, and to place this so-called mind at the mercy of material organization and non-intelligent matter.

SH 205:9-13
When will it be understood that matter has neither intelligence, life, nor sensation, and that the opposite belief is the prolific source of all suffering?  God created all through Mind, and made all perfect and eternal.

SH 2:23-24 2nd God
God is intelligence.

SH 310:10
God is His own infinite Mind, and expresses all.

SH 310:29-31
Mind is God, and God is not seen by material sense, because Mind is Spirit, which material sense cannot discern.

SH 311:3-6 (to 1st .)
What we term mortal mind or carnal mind, dependent on matter for manifestation, is not Mind.  God is Mind: all that Mind, God, is, or hath made, is good, and He made all.

SH 209:10-11
The world would collapse without Mind, without the intelligence which holds the winds in its grasp.

SH 184:16-17
Controlled by the divine intelligence, man is harmonious and eternal.

SH 63:6-9
His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor does he pass through material conditions prior to reaching intelligence.

SH 91:17
The denial of material selfhood aids the discernment of man's spiritual and eternal individuality, and destroys the erroneous knowledge gained from matter or through what are termed the material senses.

SH 128:14
A knowledge of the Science of being develops the latent abilities and possibilities of man.  It extends the atmosphere of thought, giving mortals access to broader and higher realms.  It raises the thinker into his native air of insight and perspicacity.

SH 43:28
The Science Jesus taught and lived must triumph over all material beliefs about life, substance, and intelligence, and the multitudinous errors growing from such beliefs.

SH 52:19-21
The "man of sorrows" best understood the nothingness of material life and intelligence and the mighty actuality of all-inclusive God, good.

SH 136:5-6
He claimed no intelligence, action, nor life separate from God.

SH 27:18
He laid the axe of Science at the root of material knowledge, that it might be ready to cut down the false doctrine of pantheism,--that God, or Life, is in or of matter.

SH 129:11-12
Pantheism may be defined as a belief in the intelligence of matter,--a belief which Science overthrows.

SH 222:31-2
We must destroy the false belief that life and intelligence are in matter, and plant ourselves upon what is pure and perfect.

SH 62:20-22
We must not attribute more and more intelligence to matter, but less and less, if we would be wise and healthy.

SH 279:16
In proportion as the belief disappears that life and intelligence are in or of matter, the immortal facts of being are seen, and their only idea or intelligence is in God.  Spirit is reached only through the understanding and demonstration of eternal Life and Truth and Love.

SH 14:12-15
Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,--neither in nor of matter,--and the body will then utter no complaints.

SH 275:20
Divine metaphysics, as revealed to spiritual understanding, shows clearly that all is Mind, and that Mind is God, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience, --that is, all power, all presence, all Science.  Hence all is in reality the manifestation of Mind.

SH 505:22-28
Spiritual understanding unfolds Mind,--Life, Truth, and Love,--and demonstrates the divine sense, giving the spiritual proof of the universe in Christian Science.
This understanding is not intellectual, is not the result of scholarly attainments; it is the reality of all things brought to light.

SH 90:27-30
The understanding and recognition of Spirit must finally come, and we may as well improve our time in solving the mysteries of being through an apprehension of divine Principle.

SH 209:25
Material substances or mundane formations, astronomical calculations, and all the paraphernalia of speculative theories, based on the hypothesis of material law or life and intelligence resident in matter, will ultimately vanish, swallowed up in the infinite calculus of Spirit.

SH 215:12
Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life.

SH 279:16-19
In proportion as the belief disappears that life and intelligence are in or of matter, the immortal facts of being are seen, and their only idea or intelligence is in God.

SH 96:27
As material knowledge diminishes and spiritual understanding increases, real objects will be apprehended mentally instead of materially.

SH 95:13
The greater or lesser ability of a Christian Scientist to discern thought scientifically, depends upon his genuine spirituality.  This kind of mind-reading is not clairvoyance, but it is important to success in healing, and is one of the special characteristics thereof.

SH 95:19-22
We welcome the increase of knowledge and the end of error, because even human invention must have its day, and we want that day to be succeeded by Christian Science, by divine reality.

SH 468:9-10 There
There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter.
