Wednesday Readings: Job

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the April 6, 2011 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.

Job 2:1,4-7,11
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.

And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.  But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.  And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.  #So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

Job 12:1-2
And Job answered and said, No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

Job 13:4
But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.

John 8:44

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Job 4:1,7
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?

Job 8:1,6
Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.

Job 11:1,3
Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?

Matt 5:11
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Job 18:1,5,11
Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.

Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet.

Job 22:1,5,10
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

Isa 51:7

Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.

Isa 54:17
No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.

Job 20:1,4,5,16,22,28

Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth, That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper's tongue shall slay him.

In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him.

The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

Job 21:1,27,34
But Job answered and said,

Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.

How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?

Job 19:1,3,25
Then Job answered and said,

These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not ashamed that ye make yourselves strange to me.

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

Job 23:3,5,6
Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!
I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.  Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.

Eph 6:11,12
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Job 40:6,10,14
Then answered the Lord unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.

Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee.
Job 42:7,8,10
And it was so, that after the Lord had spoken these words unto Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.  Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.

And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.

Matt 5:43,44,45 (to :)
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven:

Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures

By Mary Baker Eddy

SH 584:17-21
DEVIL.  Evil; a lie; error; neither corporeality nor mind; the opposite of Truth; a belief in sin, sickness, and death; animal magnetism or hypnotism; the lust of the flesh, which saith: "I am life and intelligence in matter.

SH 580:30
Jesus said of the devil, "He was a murderer from the beginning, . . . he is a liar and the father of it." This view of Satan is confirmed by the name often conferred upon him in Scripture, the "adversary."

SH 103:15-24
The maximum of good is the infinite God and His idea, the All-in-all.  Evil is a suppositional lie.
As named in Christian Science, animal magnetism or hypnotism is the specific term for error, or mortal mind.  It is the false belief that mind is in matter, and is both evil and good; that evil is as real as good and more powerful.  This belief has not one quality of Truth.  It is either ignorant or malicious.  The malicious form of hypnotism ultimates in moral idiocy.

SH 480:20
It is the opposite of good--that is, evil--which seems to make men capable of wrong-doing.  Hence, evil is but an illusion, and it has no real basis.  Evil is a false belief.  God is not its author.  The supposititious parent of evil is a lie.

SH 554:20
Jesus defined this opposite of God and His creation better than we can, when he said, "He is a liar, and the father of it."  Jesus also said, "Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?" This he said of Judas, one of Adam's race.  Jesus never intimated that God made a devil, but he did say, "Ye are of your father, the devil."  All these sayings were to show that mind in matter is the author of itself, and is simply a falsity and illusion.

92:21 (only)
Uncover error, and it turns the lie upon you.

564:3-9
As of old, evil still charges the spiritual idea with error's own nature and methods.  This malicious animal instinct, of which the dragon is the type, incites mortals to kill morally and physically even their fellow-mortals, and worse still, to charge the innocent with the crime.  This last infirmity of sin will sink its perpetrator into a night without a star.

SH 451:26-3
All mental malpractice arises from ignorance or malice aforethought.  It is the injurious action of one mortal mind controlling another from wrong motives, and it is practised either with a mistaken or a wicked purpose.
Show your student that mental malpractice tends to blast moral sense, health, and the human life.  Instruct him how to bar the door of his thought against this seeming power,--a task not difficult, when one understands that evil has in reality no power.

SH 454:9
Human hate has no legitimate mandate and no kingdom.  Love is enthroned.  That evil or matter has neither intelligence nor power, is the doctrine of absolute Christian Science, and this is the great truth which strips all disguise from error.

411:1
Said Job: "The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me."

405:18-19 (to 1st .)
The good man finally can overcome his fear of sin.

SH 234:31-3
Evil thoughts and aims reach no farther and do no more harm than one's belief permits.  Evil thoughts, lusts, and malicious purposes cannot go forth, like wandering pollen, from one human mind to another, finding unsuspected lodgment, if virtue and truth build a strong defence.

SH 419:25-28
Never fear the mental malpractitioner, the mental assassin, who, in attempting to rule mankind, tramples upon the divine Principle of metaphysics, for God is the only power.

SH 102:16-29

The mild forms of animal magnetism are disappearing, and its aggressive features are coming to the front.  The looms of crime, hidden in the dark recesses of mortal thought, are every hour weaving webs more complicated and subtle.  So secret are the present methods of animal magnetism that they ensnare the age into indolence, and produce the very apathy on the subject which the criminal desires.  The following is an extract from the Boston Herald:
"Mesmerism is a problem not lending itself to an easy explanation and development.  It implies the exercise of despotic control, and is much more likely to be abused by its possessor, than otherwise employed, for the individual or society."

SH 239:11
The wicked man is not the ruler of his upright neighbor.  Let it be understood that success in error is defeat in Truth.  The watchword of Christian Science is Scriptural: "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts."

SH 495:31-5

In the Science of Mind, you will soon ascertain that error cannot destroy error.  You will also learn that in Science there is no transfer of evil suggestions from one mortal to another, for there is but one Mind, and this ever-present omnipotent Mind is reflected by man and governs the entire universe.

SH 406:19-25
Resist evil--error of every sort--and it will flee from you.  Error is opposed to Life.  We can, and ultimately shall, so rise as to avail ourselves in every direction of the supremacy of Truth over error, Life over death, and good over evil, and this growth will go on until we arrive at the fulness of God's idea, and no more fear that we shall be sick and die.

SH 101:21
The author's own observations of the workings of animal magnetism convince her that it is not a remedial agent, and that its effects upon those who practise it, and upon their subjects who do not resist it, lead to moral and to physical death.

SH 446:24-25

Resisting evil, you overcome it and prove its nothingness.

SH 273:29-3
Science shows that material, conflicting mortal opinions and beliefs emit the effects of error at all times, but this atmosphere of mortal mind cannot be destructive to morals and health when it is opposed promptly and persistently by Christian Science.  Truth and Love antidote this mental miasma, and thus invigorate and sustain existence.

SH 393:8-18
Mind is the master of the corporeal senses, and can conquer sickness, sin, and death.  Exercise this God-given authority.  Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action.  Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good.  God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man.
Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government.

SH 571:15-19

At all times and under all circumstances, overcome evil with good.  Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil.  Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you.

SH 568:24-30
For victory over a single sin, we give thanks and magnify the Lord of Hosts.  What shall we say of the mighty conquest over all sin?  A louder song, sweeter than has ever before reached high heaven, now rises clearer and nearer to the great heart of Christ; for the accuser is not there, and Love sends forth her primal and everlasting strain.
