Wednesday Readings: Honor Thy Father and Mother

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the Sept. 29, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Prov. 1:8-10,11 (to 2nd ,),13,14-16
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.  #My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.  If they say, Come with us,

We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

Prov 3:7-18
Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.  It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.  Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.  My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.  Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.  For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.  She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.  Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.  Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.  She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

Prov. 3:19,21
The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:

Prov. 3:23-24
Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.  When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

Prov. 4:1-4
Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.  For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.  For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.  He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

Eph. 6:1-3,8 (to 2nd ,)
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.  Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord,

Matt. 6:9 Our
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

I Chron. 7:31 who (to father)
who is the father

Mark 3:33 Who (to 3rd ,)
Who is my mother,

Eph. 4:4 (to is),6

There is One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Ps. 100:3 it

it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Deut. 4:39

Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the Lord he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.

Deut. 15:6 (to :)

For the Lord thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee:

Deut. 28:1-6,8,11,12 (to :)

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.  Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.  Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.  Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store.  Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

The Lord shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

And the Lord shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers to give thee.  The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand:

Science and Helath with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 256:7
Love, the divine Principle, is the Father and Mother of the universe, including man.

31:4
Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh.  He said: "Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."  Again he asked: "Who is my mother, and who are my brethren," implying that it is they who do the will of his Father.  We have no record of his calling any man by the name of ^father^.  He recognized Spirit, God, as the only creator, and therefore as the Father of all.

SH 516:21
Man and woman as coexistent and eternal with God forever reflect, in glorified quality, the infinite Father-Mother God.

16:26-29

Our Father which art in heaven,

  "Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious,"

Hallowed be Thy name.

  "Adorable One."

SH 586:9

FATHER.  Eternal Life; the one Mind; the divine Principle, commonly called God.

SH 592:16

MOTHER.  God; divine and eternal Principle; Life, Truth, and Love.

SH 332:4-5

VIII.  Father-Mother is the name for Deity, which indicates His tender relationship to His spiritual creation.

SH 573:17-18

Thus man was no longer regarded as a miserable sinner, but as the blessed child of God.

SH 167:17

To have one God and avail yourself of the power of Spirit, you must love God supremely.

SH 4:17-22

Simply asking that we may love God will never make us love Him; but the longing to be better and holier, expressed in daily watchfulness and in striving to assimilate more of the divine character, will mould and fashion us anew, until we awake in His likeness.

496:5

You will learn that in Christian Science the first duty is to obey God, to have one Mind, and to love another as yourself.

183:21

Divine Mind rightly demands man's entire obedience, affection, and strength.  No reservation is made for any lesser loyalty.  Obedience to Truth gives man power and strength.  Submission to error superinduces loss of power.

SH 228:25-27

There is no power apart from God.  Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God.

SH 140:8-12

We shall obey and adore in proportion as we apprehend the divine nature and love Him understandingly, warring no more over the corporeality, but rejoicing in the affluence of our God.

SH 495:28-31

Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love.

SH 265:24

The aspiration after heavenly good comes even before we discover what belongs to wisdom and Love.  The loss of earthly hopes and pleasures brightens the ascending path of many a heart.  The pains of sense quickly inform us that the pleasures of sense are mortal and that joy is spiritual.

275:10
To grasp the reality and order of being in its Science, you must begin by reckoning God as the divine Principle of all that really is.  Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, combine as one,--and are the Scriptural names for God.  All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, and effect belong to God.  These are His attributes, the eternal manifestations of the infinite divine Principle, Love.  No wisdom is wise but His wisdom; no truth is true, no love is lovely, no life is Life but the divine; no good is, but the good God bestows.

62:4

The entire education of children should be such as to form habits of obedience to the moral and spiritual law, with which the child can meet and master the belief in so-called physical laws, a belief which breeds disease.

SH 231:30

Man, governed by his Maker, having no other Mind,--planted on the Evangelist's statement that "all things were made by Him [the Word of God]; and without Him was not anything made that was made,"--can triumph over sin, sickness, and death.

SH 151:26

All that really exists is the divine Mind and its idea, and in this Mind the entire being is found harmonious and eternal.  The straight and narrow way is to see and acknowledge this fact, yield to this power, and follow the leadings of truth.

SH 205:32

When we fully understand our relation to the Divine, we can have no other Mind but His,--no other Love, wisdom, or Truth, no other sense of Life, and no consciousness of the existence of matter or error.

241:1

"Whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth."  He, who knows God's will or the demands of divine Science and obeys them, incurs the hostility of envy; and he who refuses obedience to God, is chastened by Love.

SH 454:18

Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way.  Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action.  Love is priestess at the altar of Truth.  Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept.  Patience must "have her perfect work."

SH 3:9

His work is done, and we have only to avail ourselves of God's rule in order to receive His blessing, which enables us to work out our own salvation.

SH 425:21-23

God is more to a man than his belief, and the less we acknowledge matter or its laws, the more immortality we possess.

SH 497:5-6 We

We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God.

SH 536:11-16

If man's spiritual gravitation and attraction to one Father, in whom we "live, and move, and have our being," should be lost, and if man should be governed by corporeality instead of divine Principle, by body instead of by Soul, man would be annihilated.

SH 427:23

Immortal Mind, governing all, must be acknowledged as supreme in the physical realm, so-called, as well as in the spiritual.

SH 143:27-31

If Mind was first chronologically, is first potentially, and must be first eternally, then give to Mind the glory, honor, dominion, and power everlastingly due its holy name.

SH 4:13

Its motives are made manifest in the blessings they bring,--blessings which, even if not acknowledged in audible words, attest our worthiness to be partakers of Love.

SH 326:8

All nature teaches God's love to man, but man cannot love God supremely and set his whole affections on spiritual things, while loving the material or trusting in it more than in the spiritual.
