Wednesday Readings: Hallowed Be Thy Name

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the April 27, 2011 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Matt. 6:9 Our
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Ps. 103:1
Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

Ex. 3:13-14 Moses
Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name?  what shall I say unto them?  And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Isa. 52:6 my
my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.

Isa. 42:8
I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Zech. 13:8 (to that),9 1st they
And it shall come to pass, thatthey shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

I Kings 18:1,2,17-24,26,30,33,35-39
And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.  And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.

And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?  And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.  Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.  So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.  And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.  Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.  Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God.  And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down.

And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.  And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.  Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.  Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.  And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God.

Acts 2:21
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Ex. 20:24 in
in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

John 10:23-25,30
And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.  Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.  Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.

I and my Father are one.

Acts 3:1-12,13 (to ;),16
Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.  And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.  And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us.  And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.  Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.  And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ancle bones received strength.  And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.  And all the people saw him walking and praising God: And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.  And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering.  #And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?  The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus;

And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

James 5:13 (to 1st .),14,15 (to ;)
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray.

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up;

Ps 72:18,19 (to :)
Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be his glorious name for ever:

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

S&H 16:26 (only),28-29
Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
  ^Adorable One.^

SH 497:5-6 We
We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God.

SH 228:14-15
Mortals will some day assert their freedom in the name of Almighty God.

SH 6:17 (only)
  "God is Love."

SH 319:21-23,27-5
The divine Science taught in the original language of the Bible came through inspiration, and needs inspiration to be understood.

A misplaced word changes the sense and misstates the Science of the Scriptures, as, for instance, to name Love as merely an attribute of God; but we can by special and proper capitalization speak of the love of Love, meaning by that what the beloved disciple meant in one of his epistles, when he said, "God is love."  Likewise we can speak of the truth of Truth and of the life of Life, for Christ plainly declared, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."   Metaphors abound in the Bible, and names are often expressive of spiritual ideas.

SH 587:5
GOD.  The great I AM; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence.

SH 588:20
I AM.  God; incorporeal and eternal Mind; divine Principle; the only Ego.
SH 256:13-16
The everlasting I AM is not bounded nor compressed within the narrow limits of physical humanity, nor can He be understood aright through mortal concepts.

SH 290:1
Life is the everlasting I AM, the Being who was and is and shall be, whom nothing can erase.

SH 550:20-23
If Life has any starting-point whatsoever, then the great I AM is a myth.  If Life is God, as the Scriptures imply, then Life is not embryonic, it is infinite.

SH 267:10
The great I AM made all "that was made."  Hence man and the spiritual universe coexist with God.

SH 351:27
The Israelites centred their thoughts on the material in their attempted worship of the spiritual.  To them matter was substance, and Spirit was shadow.  They thought to worship Spirit from a material standpoint, but this was impossible.  They might appeal to Jehovah, but their prayer brought down no proof that it was heard, because they did not sufficiently understand God to be able to demonstrate His power to heal,--to make harmony the reality and discord the unreality.

SH 524:1-12
The idolatry which followed this material mythology is seen in the Phoenician worship of Baal, in the Moabitish god Chemosh, in the Moloch of the Amorites, in the Hindoo Vishnu, in the Greek Aphrodite, and in a thousand other so-called deities.
It was also found among the Israelites, who constantly went after "strange gods."  They called the Supreme Being by the national name of Jehovah.  In that name of Jehovah, the true idea of God seems almost lost.  God becomes "a man of war," a tribal god to be worshipped, rather than Love, the divine Principle to be lived and loved.

SH 524:16-17
Did the divine and infinite Principle become a finite deity, that He should now be called Jehovah?

SH 319:7
Having faith in the divine Principle of health and spiritually understanding God, sustains man under all circumstances; whereas the lower appeal to the general faith in material means (commonly called nature) must yield to the all-might of infinite Spirit.

SH 200:23
These so-called material senses must yield to the infinite Spirit, named God.

SH 93:22-25
In Christian Science, Spirit, as a proper noun, is the name of the Supreme Being.  It means quantity and quality, and applies exclusively to God.

SH 71:7
Soul is synonymous with Spirit, God, the creative, governing, infinite Principle outside of finite form, which forms only reflect.

SH 60:29-1
Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul.  Higher enjoyments alone can satisfy the cravings of immortal man.

SH 275:12
Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, combine as one,--and are the Scriptural names for God.  All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, and effect belong to God.  These are His attributes, the eternal manifestations of the infinite divine Principle, Love.  No wisdom is wise but His wisdom; no truth is true, no love is lovely, no life is Life but the divine; no good is, but the good God bestows.

SH 405:30
Belief in material suffering causes mortals to retreat from their error, to flee from body to Spirit, and to appeal to divine sources outside of themselves.

SH 252:15
The false evidence of material sense contrasts strikingly with the testimony of Spirit.  Material sense lifts its voice with the arrogance of reality and says:
I am wholly dishonest, and no man knoweth it.  I can cheat, lie, commit adultery, rob, murder, and I elude detection by smooth-tongued villainy.  Animal in propensity, deceitful in sentiment, fraudulent in purpose, I mean to make my short span of life one gala day.  What a nice thing is sin!  How sin succeeds, where the good purpose waits!  The world is my kingdom.  I am enthroned in the gorgeousness of matter.  But a touch, an accident, the law of God, may at any moment annihilate my peace, for all my fancied joys are fatal.  Like bursting lava, I expand but to my own despair, and shine with the resplendency of consuming fire.

SH 530:20-25 (to 1st .)
I can do what God has not done for you.  Bow down to me and have another god.  Only admit that I am real, that sin and sense are more pleasant to the eyes than spiritual Life, more to be desired than Truth, and I shall know you, and you will be mine.

SH 287:19-20 (to ;)
It saith, "I am man, but I am not the image and likeness of God;

252:31-8
  Spirit, bearing opposite testimony, saith:
I am Spirit.  Man, whose senses are spiritual, is my likeness.  He reflects the infinite understanding, for I am Infinity.  The beauty of holiness, the perfection of being, imperishable glory,--all are Mine, for I am God.  I give immortality to man, for I am Truth.  I include and impart all bliss, for I am Love.  I give life, without beginning and without end, for I am Life.  I am supreme and give all, for I am Mind.  I am the substance of all, because I AM THAT I AM.

SH 456:3-7
Teaching or practising in the name of Truth, but contrary to its spirit or rules, is most dangerous quackery.  Strict adherence to the divine Principle and rules of the scientific method has secured the only success of the students of Christian Science.

SH 204:23
False and self-assertive theories have given sinners the notion that they can create what God cannot,--namely, sinful mortals in God's image, thus usurping the name without the nature of the image or reflection of divine Mind; but in Science it can never be said that man has a mind of his own, distinct from God, the ^all^ Mind.

SH 336:1-6
Mind is the I AM, or infinity.  Mind never enters the finite.  Intelligence never passes into non-intelligence, or matter.  Good never enters into evil, the unlimited into the limited, the eternal into the temporal, nor the immortal into mortality.

SH 143:27-31
If Mind was first chronologically, is first potentially, and must be first eternally, then give to Mind the glory, honor, dominion, and power everlastingly due its holy name.

SH 483:27-30
And Christian Science does honor God as no other theory honors Him, and it does this in the way of His appointing, by doing many wonderful works through the divine name and nature.
