God Does Not Curse

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the Jan. 20, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Ex. 22:28
Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.
Numbers 22:1 the,2,4 And Balak,5-15,21-27,31-33 (to :),34,35 the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan byJericho.
And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.
He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:
Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me:
peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land:
for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.
And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.
And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the Lord shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?
And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.
And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.
And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land:
for the Lord refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.
And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.
And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her God does not Curse - from into the way.
But the angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on
that side.
And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed
Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.
And the angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn
either to the right hand or to the left.
And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger
was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.
Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way,
and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times?
behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:
And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times:
And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.
And the angel of the Lord said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
Num 23:1-5,8,9,11,18-20
And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams.
And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.
And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go: peradventure the Lord will come to meet me: and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high place.
And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram.
And the Lord put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.
How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the Lord hath not defied?
For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.
And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.
And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

458:23-24,25-28 The
The Christianly scientific man reflects the divine law, thus becoming a law unto himself.
The Christian Scientist wisely shapes his course, and is honest and consistent in following the leadings of divine Mind.
SH 149:29-31
We need to understand the affirmations of divine Science, dismiss superstition, and demonstrate truth according to Christ.
100:1-2,6-11
Mesmerism or animal magnetism was first brought into notice by Mesmer in Germany in 1775. His propositions were as follows:
"There exists a mutual influence between the celestial bodies, the earth, and animated things. Animal bodies are susceptible to the influence of this agent, disseminating itself through the substance of the nerves."
SH 103:18-22
As named in Christian Science, animal magnetism or hypnotism is the specific term for error, or mortal mind.
It is the false belief that mind is in matter, and is both evil and good; that evil is as real as good and more powerful.
SH 451:28
It is the injurious action of one mortal mind controlling another from wrong motives, and it is practised either with a mistaken or a wicked purpose.
481:25 (only)
It cannot sustain itself.
SH 402:20
We say that one human mind can influence another andin this way affect the body, but we rarely remember that
we govern our own bodies. The error, mesmerism—
or hypnotism, to use the recent term illustrates the fact just stated. The operator would make his subjects believe that they cannot act voluntarily and handle themselves as they should do. If they yield to this influence, it is because their belief is not better instructed by spiritual understanding. Hence the proof that hypnotism is not scientific; Science cannot produce both disorder and order. The involuntary pleasure or pain of the person under hypnotic control is proved to be a belief without a real cause.
SH 151:21-23
The human mind has no power to kill or to cure, and it has no controlover God's man.
SH 353:20-22
We must not continue to admit the somethingness of superstition, but we must yield up all belief in it and be wise.
469:20,25
We can have but one Mind, if that one is infinite. We bury the sense of infinitude,
when we admit that, although God is infinite, evil has a place in this infinity, for evil can have no place, where all space is filled with God.
We lose the high signification of omnipotence, when after admitting that God, or good, is omnipresent and has all-power, we still believe there is another power, named evil. This belief that there is more than one mind is as pernicious to divine theology as are ancient mythology and pagan idolatry. With one Father, even God, the whole family of man would be brethren; and with one Mind and that God, or good, the brotherhood of man would consist of Love and Truth, and have unity of Principle and spiritual power which constitute divine Science. The supposed existence of more than one mind was the basic error of idolatry. This error assumed the loss of spiritual power, the loss of the spiritual presence of Life as infinite Truth without an unlikeness, and the loss of Love as ever present and universal.
SH 319:17
Mystery, miracle, sin, and death will disappear when it becomes fairly understood that the divine Mind controls man and
man has no Mind but God.
SH 544:16-17
All is under the control of the one Mind, even God.
SH 106:9
Man is properly selfgoverned only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love.
SH 419:25-28
Never fear the mental malpractitioner, the mental assassin, who, in attempting to rule mankind, tramples upon the divine Principle of metaphysics, for God is the only power.
SH 192:24
Evil is not power. It is a mockery of strength, which erelong betrays its weakness and falls, never to rise.
SH 184:12-17
Truth, Life, and Love are the only legitimate and eternal demands on man, and they are spiritual lawgivers, enforcing obedience through divine statutes.
Controlled by the divine intelligence, man is harmonious and eternal.
SH 340:23
One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, "Love thy neighbor as thyself;" annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, — whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed.
SH 455:30
The higher your attainment in the Science of mental healing and teaching, the more impossible it will become for you intentionally to influence mankind adverse to its highest hope and achievement.
SH 192:21-24
Your influence for good depends upon the weight you throw into the right scale. The good you do and embody gives you the only power obtainable.
151:28
The straight and narrow way is to see and acknowledge this fact, yield to this power, and follow the leadings of truth.
SH 103:6-9
The destruction of the claims of mortal mind through Science, by which man can escape from sin and mortality, blesses the whole human family.
