Wednesday Readings: God's Protecting Power

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the Sept. 22, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Ps. 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Ps 121:8
The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Ps 139:7-10
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?  If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.  If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

I Peter 4:11 (to 1st .)

If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever.

Rom 1:1,6,16
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Acts 13:16 Paul, 32 we, 33 (to Jesus), 38, 39 (to 1st ,),42-45,50-52 the
Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.

we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus

Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things,

And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.  Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.  #And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.  But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.  But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.  And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Ps 86:2,10
Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.

For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

Acts 15:40

And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

Acts 16:16-21,23,25,26
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.  And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.  #And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.  And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

Ps 54:6 I will praise, 7 (to :)
I will praise thy name, O Lord; for it is good.  For he hath delivered me out of all trouble:

Acts 19:11
And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

Acts 27:1,20-25 (to :), 41-44
And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band.

And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.  But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.  And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship.  For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.  Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer:

And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.  And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.  But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land: And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.

II Tim 4:18 the (to :)
the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom:

I Thes 5:23 and I,24

and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

Acts 28:30,31
And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.

Rom 8:28 we,31 If,35,37-39
we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

If God be for us, who can be against us?

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 444:10
Step by step will those who trust Him find that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

336:25-26

XXIV.  God, the divine Principle of man, and man in God's likeness are inseparable, harmonious, and eternal.

SH 387:27

The history of Christianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on man by his heavenly Father, omnipotent Mind, who gives man faith and understanding whereby to defend himself, not only from temptation, but from bodily suffering.

SH 28:24
To suppose that persecution for righteousness' sake belongs to the past, and that Christianity to-day is at peace with the world because it is honored by sects and societies, is to mistake the very nature of religion.  Error repeats itself.  The trials encountered by prophet, disciple, and apostle, "of whom the world was not worthy," await, in some form, every pioneer of truth.

SH 317:6
Whosoever lives most the life of Jesus in this age and declares best the power of Christian Science, will drink of his Master's cup.  Resistance to Truth will haunt his steps, and he will incur the hatred of sinners, till "wisdom is justified of her children."  These blessed benedictions rest upon Jesus' followers: "If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you;" "Lo, I am with you alway,"--that is, not only in all time, but in ^all ways^ and conditions.

SH 238:6-9,10
To obey the Scriptural command, "Come out from among them, and be ye separate," is to incur society's frown; but this frown, more than flatteries, enables one to be Christian.

"If God be for us, who can be against us?"

SH 288:14

The lightnings and thunderbolts of error may burst and flash till the cloud is cleared and the tumult dies away in the distance.  Then the raindrops of divinity refresh the earth.  As St. Paul says: "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God" (of Spirit).

SH 450:27
Who, that has felt the perilous beliefs in life, substance, and intelligence separated from God, can say that there is no error of belief?  Knowing the claim of animal magnetism, that all evil combines in the belief of life, substance, and intelligence in matter, electricity, animal nature, and organic life, who will deny that these are the errors which Truth must and will annihilate?  Christian Scientists must live under the constant pressure of the apostolic command to come out from the material world and be separate.  They must renounce aggression, oppression and the pride of power.  Christianity, with the crown of Love upon her brow, must be their queen of life.

SH 5:15-18
The followers of Christ drank his cup.  Ingratitude and persecution filled it to the brim; but God pours the riches of His love into the understanding and affections, giving us strength according to our day.

SH 444:4

"All things work together for good to them that love God," is the dictum of Scripture.

97:22,29

It requires courage to utter truth; for the higher Truth lifts her voice, the louder will error scream, until its inarticulate sound is forever silenced in oblivion.

Christianity is again demonstrating the Life that is Truth, and the Truth that is Life, by the apostolic work of casting out error and healing the sick.  Earth has no repayment for the persecutions which attend a new step in Christianity; but the spiritual recompense of the persecuted is assured in the elevation of existence above mortal discord and in the gift of divine Love.

SH 571:18-19

Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you.

SH 494:10-11
Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.

SH 494:15-19
The miracle of grace is no miracle to Love.  Jesus demonstrated the inability of corporeality, as well as the infinite ability of Spirit, thus helping erring human sense to flee from its own convictions and seek safety in divine Science.

SH 43:28-32
The Science Jesus taught and lived must triumph over all material beliefs about life, substance, and intelligence, and the multitudinous errors growing from such beliefs.
  Love must triumph over hate.

SH 306:25
Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle, --is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal.

SH 151:23-26
The divine Mind that made man maintains His own image and likeness.  The human mind is opposed to God and must be put off, as St. Paul declares.

560:22-28
Abuse of the motives and religion of St. Paul hid from view the apostle's character, which made him equal to his great mission.  Persecution of all who have spoken something new and better of God has not only obscured the light of the ages, but has been fatal to the persecutors.  Why?  Because it has hid from them the true idea which has been presented.

SH 91:5
Let us rid ourselves of the belief that man is separated from God, and obey only the divine Principle, Life and Love.  Here is the great point of departure for all true spiritual growth.

427:14-16, 22
Nothing can interfere with the harmony of being nor end the existence of man in Science.

God, Life, Truth, and Love make man undying.  Immortal Mind, governing all, must be acknowledged as supreme in the physical realm, so-called, as well as in the spiritual.

SH 303:28-15
Spiritual man is the image or idea of God, an idea which cannot be lost nor separated from its divine Principle.  When the evidence before the material senses yielded to spiritual sense, the apostle declared that nothing could alienate him from God, from the sweet sense and presence of Life and Truth.   It is ignorance and false belief, based on a material sense of things, which hide spiritual beauty and goodness.  Understanding this, Paul said: "Neither death, nor life, . . . nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God."  This is the doctrine of Christian Science:  that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation, or object; that joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy; that good can never produce evil; that matter can never produce mind nor life result in death.  The perfect man--governed by God, his perfect Principle--is sinless and eternal.
