Wednesday Readings: Food

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the Nov. December 1, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Matt 5:6
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Dan 1:1,3-6,8-15,18-20
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes; Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.  And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.  Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.  Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.  And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.  Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.  Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.  So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.  And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.

Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.  And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.  And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

Matt 6:11
Give us this day our daily bread.

John 6:26 (to Jesus), 26 said (to 1st ,),27-35,47,48,51 (to 2nd :)
Jesus said,
Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.  Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?  Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.  They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?  Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.  Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.  For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.  Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.  And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.  I am that bread of life.

I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever:

Matt 6:25 (to ;)

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink;

Rom 14:17
For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

S&H

SH 530:5
In divine Science, man is sustained by God, the divine Principle of being.  The earth, at God's command, brings forth food for man's use.  Knowing this, Jesus once said, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink,"--presuming not on the prerogative of his creator, but recognizing God, the Father and Mother of all, as able to feed and clothe man as He doth the lilies.

SH 232:19-22
Jesus never taught that drugs, food, air, and exercise could make a man healthy, or that they could destroy human life; nor did he illustrate these errors by his practice.

SH 248:8
Immortal Mind feeds the body with supernal freshness and fairness, supplying it with beautiful images of thought and destroying the woes of sense which each day brings to a nearer tomb.

388:12-18, 22-24
Admit the common hypothesis that food is the nutriment of life, and there follows the necessity for another admission in the opposite direction,--that food has power to destroy Life, God, through a deficiency or an excess, a quality or a quantity.  This is a specimen of the ambiguous nature of all material health-theories.

The fact is, food does not affect the absolute Life of man, and this becomes self-evident, when we learn that God is our Life.

SH 388:31-389:5
If mortals think that food disturbs the harmonious functions of mind and body, either the food or this thought must be dispensed with, for the penalty is coupled with the belief.  Which shall it be?  If this decision be left to Christian Science, it will be given in behalf of the control of Mind over this belief and every erroneous belief, or material condition.

SH 197:21-22

We are told that the simple food our forefathers ate helped to make them healthy, but that is a mistake.

SH 389:13-15

Our dietetic theories first admit that food sustains the life of man, and then discuss the certainty that food can kill man.

SH 388:20
If food was prepared by Jesus for his disciples, it cannot destroy life.

SH 221:1-16; 222:4-17

I knew a person who when quite a child adopted the Graham system to cure dyspepsia.  For many years, he ate only bread and vegetables, and drank nothing but water.  His dyspepsia increasing, he decided that his diet should be more rigid, and thereafter he partook of but one meal in twenty-four hours, this meal consisting of only a thin slice of bread without water.  His physician also recommended that he should not wet his parched throat until three hours after eating.  He passed many weary years in hunger and weakness, almost in starvation, and finally made up his mind to die, having exhausted the skill of the doctors, who kindly informed him that death was indeed his only alternative.  At this point Christian Science saved him, and he is now in perfect health without a vestige of the old complaint.

This person learned that food affects the body only as mortal mind has its material methods of working, one of which is to believe that proper food supplies nutriment and strength to the human system.  He learned also that mortal mind makes a mortal body, whereas Truth regenerates this fleshly mind and feeds thought with the bread of Life.   Food had less power to help or to hurt him after he had availed himself of the fact that Mind governs man, and he also had less faith in the so-called pleasures and pains of matter.  Taking less thought about what he should eat or drink, consulting the stomach less about the economy of living and God more, he recovered strength and flesh rapidly.

SH 389:18

If God has, as prevalent theories maintain, instituted laws that food shall support human life, He cannot annul these regulations by an opposite law that food shall be inimical to existence.

SH 389:28

A case of convulsions, produced by indigestion, came under my observation.  In her belief the woman had chronic liver-complaint, and was then suffering from a complication of symptoms connected with this belief.  I cured her in a few minutes.  One instant she spoke despairingly of herself.  The next minute she said, "My food is all digested, and I should like something more to eat."

SH 461:1-4
I do not maintain that anyone can exist in the flesh without food and raiment; but I do believe that the real man is immortal and that he lives in Spirit, not matter.

SH 221:29
This new-born understanding, that neither food nor the stomach, without the consent of mortal mind, can make one suffer, brings with it another lesson,--that gluttony is a sensual illusion, and that this phantasm of mortal mind disappears as we better apprehend our spiritual existence and ascend the ladder of life.

SH 53:3-5
Jesus was no ascetic.  He did not fast as did the Baptist's disciples; yet there never lived a man so far removed from appetites and passions as the Nazarene.

30:26-28,30-32
If we have triumphed sufficiently over the errors of material sense to allow Soul to hold the control, we shall loathe sin and rebuke it under every mask.

We cannot choose for ourselves, but must work out our salvation in the way Jesus taught.

SH 124:32

The elements and functions of the physical body and of the physical world will change as mortal mind changes its beliefs.  What is now considered the best condition for organic and functional health in the human body may no longer be found indispensable to health.  Moral conditions will be found always harmonious and health-giving.  Neither organic inaction nor overaction is beyond God's control; and man will be found normal and natural to changed mortal thought, and therefore more harmonious in his manifestations than he was in the prior states which human belief created and sanctioned.

SH 254:8-12
To stop eating, drinking, or being clothed materially before the spiritual facts of existence are gained step by step, is not legitimate.  When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path.

307:25 The

The divine Mind is the Soul of man, and gives man dominion over all things. Man was not created from a material basis, nor bidden to obey material laws which Spirit never made; his province is in spiritual statutes, in the higher law of Mind.

SH 17:4-5
Give us this day our daily bread;
^Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections;^

SH 35:26-27 (to 1st .)

Our bread, "which cometh down from heaven," is Truth.
