Wednesday Readings: Family Disputes

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the Aug. 25, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Mal. 2:10
Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

Gen. 4:1-5 Adam,8-10

Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.  And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.  And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.  And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.  #And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?  And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

Lev. 19:17 (to :)
Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart:

I John 4:20-21

If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?  And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

Gen. 13:1-2 Abram,5-10 (to 3rd ,),11, 14-15
Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.  And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.  And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.  And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land. And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.  Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.  And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where,

Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

II Cor. 8:12-15 if

if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.  For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality: As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.

Gen. 27:41 Esau,42-44
Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.  And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.  Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran; And tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's fury turn away;

Gen. 32:1,3,6,9 (to 3rd ,), 11,13,22
And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac,

Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

Gen. 33:1 (to 1st .),4,8,9-11,16,17

And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men.

And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.  And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.  And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.  Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.

So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.  And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

Rom. 12:9-14,18
Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.  Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.  Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

I Pet. 2:17 (to 2nd .)
Honour all men. Love the brotherhood.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 262:27-28
The foundation of mortal discord is a false sense of man's origin.

SH 538:23

^Genesis^ iv. 1.  And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord [Jehovah].

SH 545:21-25
The translators of this record of scientific creation entertained a false sense of being.  They believed in the existence of matter, its propagation and power.  From that standpoint of error, they could not apprehend the nature and operation of Spirit.

SH 546:13
This represents error as starting from an idea of good on a material basis. It supposes God and man to be manifested only through the corporeal senses, although the material senses can take no cognizance of Spirit or the spiritual idea.

SH 319:5-7

To calculate one's life-prospects from a material basis, would infringe upon spiritual law and misguide human hope.

307:26
Man was not created from a material basis, nor bidden to obey material laws which Spirit never made; his province is in spiritual statutes, in the higher law of Mind.

SH 263:27-28

The multiplication of a human and mortal sense of persons and things is not creation.

SH 540:28-30; 541:3-5
Cain is the type of mortal and material man, conceived in sin and "shapen in iniquity;" he is not the type of Truth and Love.

Jealous of his brother's gift, Cain seeks Abel's life, instead of making his own gift a higher tribute to the Most High.

SH 541:19-23,25-26

^Genesis^ iv. 9.  And the Lord [Jehovah] said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother?  And he said, I know not:  Am I my brother's keeper?
Here the serpentine lie invents new forms.  At first it usurps divine power.
Now it repudiates even the human duty of man towards his brother.

SH 64:8-10

Pride, envy, or jealousy seems on most occasions to be the master of ceremonies, ruling out primitive Christianity.

SH 68:9-11

Jealousy is the grave of affection.  The presence of mistrust, where confidence is due, withers the flowers of Eden and scatters love's petals to decay.

SH 262:9-10

We cannot fathom the nature and quality of God's creation by diving into the shallows of mortal belief.

SH 541:16
The erroneous belief that life, substance, and intelligence can be material ruptures the life and brotherhood of man at the very outset.

SH 539:10-14
God could never impart an element of evil, and man possesses nothing which he has not derived from God.  How then has man a basis for wrong-doing?  Whence does he obtain the propensity or power to do evil?

SH 102:31-103:2
Christian Science despoils the kingdom of evil, and pre-eminently promotes affection and virtue in families and therefore in the community.

SH 114:25-29
It shows the scientific relation of man to God, disentangles the interlaced ambiguities of being, and sets free the imprisoned thought.  In divine Science, the universe, including man, is spiritual, harmonious, and eternal.

SH 519:11-16
Human capacity is slow to discern and to grasp God's creation and the divine power and presence which go with it, demonstrating its spiritual origin.  Mortals can never know the infinite, until they throw off the old man and reach the spiritual image and likeness.

SH 239:23-27
Mortal mind is the acknowledged seat of human motives.  It forms material concepts and produces every discordant action of the body.  If action proceeds from the divine Mind, action is harmonious.

SH 444:27
Immortals, or God's children in divine Science, are one harmonious family; but mortals, or the "children of men" in material sense, are discordant and ofttimes false brethren.

323:32-4
Willingness to become as a little child and to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea.  Gladness to leave the false landmarks and joy to see them disappear,--this disposition helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony.

SH 521:12 (only)
The harmony and immortality of man are intact.

SH 548:5
In this Science, we discover man in the image and likeness of God.  We see that man has never lost his spiritual estate and his eternal harmony.

SH 355:11

Let discord of every name and nature be heard no more, and let the harmonious and true sense of Life and being take possession of human consciousness.

SH 242:15 In
In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error,--self-will, self-justification, and self-love,--which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death.

SH 467:9-13
It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love.  Mankind will become perfect in proportion as this fact becomes apparent, war will cease and the true brotherhood of man will be established.

SH 469:30-5
With one Father, even God, the whole family of man would be brethren; and with one Mind and that God, or good, the brotherhood of man would consist of Love and Truth, and have unity of Principle and spiritual power which constitute divine Science.

SH 470:32
The relations of God and man, divine Principle and idea, are indestructible in Science; and Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony, but holds the divine order or spiritual law, in which God and all that He creates are perfect and eternal, to have remained unchanged in its eternal history.

SH 276:4-9
When the divine precepts are understood, they unfold the foundation of fellowship, in which one mind is not at war with another, but all have one Spirit, God, one intelligent source, in accordance with the Scriptural command: "Let this Mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."

SH 572:6-8
"Love one another" (I John, iii. 23), is the most simple and profound counsel of the inspired writer.

SH 13:2-3
Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals.

454:9-10 (to 2nd .)
Human hate has no legitimate mandate and no kingdom.  Love is enthroned.

366:14-16 He

He that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?"

SH 113:5-6
The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love.
