Wednesday Readings: Events in Norway

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the July 27, 2011 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Matt 2:1-3,16-18 Herod
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.  When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.  Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

Ezek 7:11 (to :)
Violence is risen up into a rod of wickedness:

Ps 42:3,6 (to :),9
My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

O my God, my soul is cast down within me:

I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

Isa 41:5,6
The isles saw it, and feared; the ends of the earth were afraid, drew near, and came.  They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother, Be of good courage.

Isa 49:21 (to 4th ,),8 (to 1st ,),17-18 2nd thy (to 1st .), 4 (to 1st ,),4
Then shalt thou say in thine heart, who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, Thus saith the Lord, thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee.  #Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee.

Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.

Isa 40:10-11, 15 2nd behold
Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.  He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.

Ps 46:1,2,5-7 (to 1st .)
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.  The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.  The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Isa 40:31 (to 1st ;)
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;

Isa 51:11 the
the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

Isa 49:13 (to 4th ,)
Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the Lord hath comforted his people,

Jer 31:6-10 Arise
Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the Lord our God.  For thus saith the Lord; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O Lord, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.  Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.  They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.  #Hear the word of the Lord, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.

Isa 40:1
Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.

Isa. 45:11 (to 1st ,),12,13 (to :)
Thus saith the Lord,

I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.  I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways:

Isa 43:15,18,26 (to :)
I am the Lord, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

Put me in remembrance:

Ps 46:10 (to :)
Be still, and know that I am God:

Isa 60:18; 59:1
Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.
Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

Ps 36:7 (to !),9
How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God!

For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

John 8:12,25 And (to saith)
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

And Jesus saith

Matt 5:4
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Matt 9:22 be (to ;)
be of good comfort;

Rom 8:38-39 neither
neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Rev 21:3,4
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.  And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

II Thess 2:16,17
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

S&H

SH 565:9-13
Led on by the grossest element of mortal mind, Herod decreed the death of every male child in order that the man Jesus, the masculine representative of the spiritual idea, might never hold sway and deprive Herod of his crown.

SH 241:9
Falsehood, envy, hypocrisy, malice, hate, revenge, and so forth, steal away the treasures of Truth.  Stripped of its coverings, what a mocking spectacle is sin!

SH 203:25
The so-called sinner is a suicide.  Sin kills the sinner and will continue to kill him so long as he sins.  The foam and fury of illegitimate living and of fearful and doleful dying should disappear on the shore of time; then the waves of sin, sorrow, and death beat in vain.

SH 5:14-15
Saints and sinners get their full award, but not always in this world.

SH 291:28-4 (to 1st .)
No final judgment awaits mortals, for the judgment-day of wisdom comes hourly and continually, even the judgment by which mortal man is divested of all material error.  As for spiritual error there is none.
When the last mortal fault is destroyed, then the final trump will sound which will end the battle of Truth with error and mortality; "but of that day and hour, knoweth no man.

SH 96:12-23
This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces.  On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace.  The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases until their nothingness appears.  These disturbances will continue until the end of error, when all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth.
Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization.  This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding.

569:20 (only)
  What must the end be?

SH 96:31
During this final conflict, wicked minds will endeavor to find means by which to accomplish more evil; but those who discern Christian Science will hold crime in check.  They will aid in the ejection of error.  They will maintain law and order, and cheerfully await the certainty of ultimate perfection.

SH 596:4 Christian
Christian Science brings God much nearer to man, and makes Him better known as the All-in-all, forever near.

SH 338:1
Christian Science, rightly understood, leads to eternal harmony.  It brings to light the only living and true God and man as made in His likeness; whereas the opposite belief--that man originates in matter and has beginning and end, that he is both soul and body, both good and evil, both spiritual and material--terminates in discord and mortality, in the error which must be destroyed by Truth.  The mortality of material man proves that error has been ingrafted into the premises and conclusions of material and mortal humanity.

SH 346:2
When man is spoken of as made in God's image, it is not sinful and sickly mortal man who is referred to, but the ideal man, reflecting God's likeness.

SH 537:9-10
A knowledge of evil was never the essence of divinity or manhood.

SH 307:26
Man was not created from a material basis, nor bidden to obey material laws which Spirit never made; his province is in spiritual statutes, in the higher law of Mind.

458:24-25 (to 1st .)
He does violence to no man.

SH 303:25; 304:9-21
God, without the image and likeness of Himself, would be a nonentity, or Mind unexpressed.  He would be without a witness or proof of His own nature.  Spiritual man is the image or idea of God, an idea which cannot be lost nor separated from its divine Principle.  When the evidence before the material senses yielded to spiritual sense, the apostle declared that nothing could alienate him from God, from the sweet sense and presence of Life and Truth.

This is the doctrine of Christian Science:  that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation, or object; that joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy; that good can never produce evil; that matter can never produce mind nor life result in death.  The perfect man--governed by God, his perfect Principle--is sinless and eternal.
Harmony is produced by its Principle, is controlled by it and abides with it.  Divine Principle is the Life of man.  Man's happiness is not, therefore, at the disposal of physical sense.  Truth is not contaminated by error.  Harmony in man is as beautiful as in music, and discord is unnatural, unreal.

SH 538:3
Truth should, and does, drive error out of all selfhood.  Truth is a two-edged sword, guarding and guiding.  Truth places the cherub wisdom at the gate of understanding to note the proper guests.  Radiant with mercy and justice, the sword of Truth gleams afar and indicates the infinite distance between Truth and error, between the material and spiritual,--the unreal and the real.

SH 571:22-25
Through trope and metaphor, the Revelator, immortal scribe of Spirit and of a true idealism, furnishes the mirror in which mortals may see their own image.

SH 573:3-5,13
The Revelator was on our plane of existence, while yet beholding what the eye cannot see,--that which is invisible to the uninspired thought.

Accompanying this scientific consciousness was another revelation, even the declaration from heaven, supreme harmony, that God, the divine Principle of harmony, is ever with men, and they are His people.  Thus man was no longer regarded as a miserable sinner, but as the blessed child of God.  Why?  Because St. John's corporeal sense of the heavens and earth had vanished, and in place of this false sense was the spiritual sense, the subjective state by which he could see the new heaven and new earth, which involve the spiritual idea and consciousness of reality.  This is Scriptural authority for concluding that such a recognition of being is, and has been, possible to men in this present state of existence,--that we can become conscious, here and now, of a cessation of death, sorrow, and pain.  This is indeed a foretaste of absolute Christian Science.  Take heart, dear sufferer, for this reality of being will surely appear sometime and in some way.  There will be no more pain, and all tears will be wiped away.  When you read this, remember Jesus' words, "The kingdom of God is within you."  This spiritual consciousness is therefore a present possibility.

574:25-30
Think of this, dear reader, for it will lift the sackcloth from your eyes, and you will behold the soft-winged dove descending upon you.  The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares.

66:9 (only)
Sorrow is salutary.

SH 67:13-14
Thus should we deport ourselves on the seething ocean of sorrow.

SH 125:12-16
As human thought changes from one stage to another of conscious pain and painlessness, sorrow and joy,--from fear to hope and from faith to understanding,--the visible manifestation will at last be man governed by Soul, not by material sense.

SH 561:1
The understanding of Truth and Love, the Principle which works out the ends of eternal good and destroys both faith in evil and the practice of evil, leads to the discernment of the divine idea.
