Wednesday Readings: Earthquakes

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the March 16, 2011 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Gen 1:1,10 and God saw
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

and God saw that it was good.

Gen 2:1,6 (to 1st ,)
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

But there went up a mist from the earth,

Isa 24:18 (to that),19,20 (to fall)
And it shall come to pass, that

The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.  The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall

Joel 3:16 the heavens, 17 (to :)

the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.  So shall ye know that I am the Lord your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain:

Heb 12:18 ye, 22,25 (to 1st .),26-28
ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

See that ye refuse not him that speaketh.

Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.  And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.  Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

Isa 54:10,11,13
For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.  O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires.

And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

Joel 2:12,13
Therefore also now, saith the Lord, Turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

II Tim 2:19 the (to 1st ,)

the foundation of God standeth sure,

I Cor 3:11
For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Luke 6:3 (to Jesus), 20 lifted, 47-49

And Jesus

lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.  But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Mark 4:35 when, 36-39

when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.  And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.  And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.  And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?  And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Luke 10:19 nothing
nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Ps 95:1-4
O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.  Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.  For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.  In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.

I Chron 16:28,29 (to :), 30-31
Give unto the Lord, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength.  Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name:

Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.  Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The Lord reigneth.

Ps 24:1
The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

Ps 46:1-3 (to 1st .), 10,11 (to 1st .)
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.  The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

I Kings 19:11-12 Go
Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

Ps 104:1 (to 1st ,),5
Bless the Lord,

Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

Nah 1:7,9
The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

What do ye imagine against the Lord? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.

Job 38:11 Hitherto (to stayed)

Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed

Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures

By Mary Baker Eddy
SH 502:22
^Genesis^ i. 1.  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

SH 585:5-8

EARTH.  A sphere; a type of eternity and immortality, which are likewise without beginning or end.
To material sense, earth is matter; to spiritual sense, it is a compound idea.

SH 205:12-13
God created all through Mind, and made all perfect and eternal.

SH 209:10-11
The world would collapse without Mind, without the intelligence which holds the winds in its grasp.

SH 512:21-24

From the infinite elements of the one Mind emanate all form, color, quality, and quantity, and these are mental, both primarily and secondarily.

SH 209:16-24
The compounded minerals or aggregated substances composing the earth, the relations which constituent masses hold to each other, the magnitudes, distances, and revolutions of the celestial bodies, are of no real importance, when we remember that they all must give place to the spiritual fact by the translation of man and the universe back into Spirit.  In proportion as this is done, man and the universe will be found harmonious and eternal.

203:3
In the Science of Christianity, Mind --omnipotence--has all-power, assigns sure rewards to righteousness, and shows that matter can neither heal nor make sick, create nor destroy.

472:24-26 All
All reality is in God and His creation, harmonious and eternal.  That which He creates is good, and He makes all that is made.

SH 83:16
The belief that the universe, including man, is governed in general by material laws, but that occasionally Spirit sets aside these laws,--this be-lief belittles omnipotent wisdom, and gives to matter the precedence over Spirit.

SH 546:12-14
"There went up a mist from the earth."  This represents error as starting from an idea of good on a material basis.

SH 523:6-10
Although presenting the exact opposite of Truth, the lie claims to be truth.  The creations of matter arise from a mist or false claim, or from mystification, and not from the firmament, or understanding, which God erects between the true and false.

464:26 (only)
Falsity has no foundation.

SH 485:32

The notion of any life or intelligence in matter is without foundation in fact, and you can have no faith in falsehood when you have learned falsehood's true nature.

SH 83:6-9
Science only can explain the incredible good and evil elements now coming to the surface.  Mortals must find refuge in Truth in order to escape the error of these latter days.

SH 96:12

This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces.  On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace.  The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases until their nothingness appears.  These disturbances will continue until the end of error, when all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth.

297:26-28 (to 2nd .)

A belief in Truth is better than a belief in error, but no mortal testimony is founded on the divine rock.  Mortal testimony can be shaken.

SH 273:2-24
There is no ^material^ truth.  The physical senses can take no cognizance of God and spiritual Truth.  Human belief has sought out many inventions, but not one of them can solve the problem of being without the divine Principle of divine Science.  Deductions from material hypotheses are not scientific. They differ from real Science because they are not based on the divine law.   Divine Science reverses the false testimony of the material senses, and thus tears away the foundations of error.  Hence the enmity between Science and the senses, and the impossibility of attaining perfect understanding till the errors of sense are eliminated.
The so-called laws of matter and of medical science have never made mortals whole, harmonious, and immortal.  Man is harmonious when governed by Soul.  Hence the importance of understanding the truth of being, which reveals the laws of spiritual existence.
God never ordained a material law to annul the spiritual law.  If there were such a material law, it would oppose the supremacy of Spirit, God, and impugn the wisdom of the creator.

SH 210:30

Because immortal sense has no error of sense, it has no sense of error; therefore it is without a destructive element.

SH 293:21-28
There is no vapid fury of mortal mind--expressed in earthquake, wind, wave, lightning, fire, bestial ferocity --and this so-called mind is self-destroyed.  The manifestations of evil, which counterfeit divine justice, are called in the Scriptures, "The anger of the Lord."  In reality, they show the self-destruction of error or matter and point to matter's opposite, the strength and permanency of Spirit.

SH 77:5-9
Existence continues to be a belief of corporeal sense until the Science of being is reached.  Error brings its own self-destruction both here and hereafter, for mortal mind creates its own physical conditions.

97:5-7

In reality, the more closely error simulates truth and so-called matter resembles its essence, mortal mind, the more impotent error becomes as a belief.

SH 93:13-18
Good never causes evil, nor creates aught that can cause evil.
Good does not create a mind susceptible of causing evil, for evil is the opposing error and not the truth of creation.  Destructive electricity is not the offspring of infinite good.

SH 70:5-6

Whatever is false or sinful can never enter the atmosphere of Spirit.

SH 122:1-7
The evidence of the physical senses often reverses the real Science of being, and so creates a reign of discord,--assigning seeming power to sin, sickness, and death; but the great facts of Life, rightly understood, defeat this triad of errors, contradict their false witnesses, and reveal the kingdom of heaven,--the actual reign of harmony on earth.

SH 587:25
HEAVEN.  Harmony; the reign of Spirit; government by divine Principle; spirituality; bliss; the atmosphere of Soul.

SH 559:8-16

The "still, small voice" of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean to the globe's remotest bound.  The inaudible voice of Truth is, to the human mind, "as when a lion roareth." It is heard in the desert and in dark places of fear.  It arouses the "seven thunders" of evil, and stirs their latent forces to utter the full diapason of secret tones.  Then is the power of Truth demonstrated,--made manifest in the destruction of error.

SH 444:10
Step by step will those who trust Him find that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
