Wednesday Readings: Our Church

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the January 26, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Isa 2:2-3
And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.  And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

Matt 16:13-19 (to :)
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?  And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.  He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.  And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven:

Matt 21:13 My (to ;)
My house shall be called the house of prayer;

Matt. 6:5 (to 1st ,), 6 enter
And when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Mark 1:21-28
And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.  And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.  And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.  And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.  And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.  And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this?  for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.  And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

Matt. 10:1

And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

I Cor. 12:7
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

Mark 11:22-25 Have

Have faith in God.  For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.  Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.  And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

Mark 12:28-34 (to 1st .)
And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?  And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.  And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.  And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.  And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.

Luke 13:18-19
Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?  It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.

Matt. 9:37-38
Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Acts 3:1
Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.

Acts 4:31-32 (to :)

And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.  And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul:

Acts 6:1-7
And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.  Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.  Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.  But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.  #And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.  And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Acts 14:21 (to again)
And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again

Acts 14:22-23
Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.  And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

Acts 14:27
And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.

I Peter 2:5-6

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.  Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Matt 5:12 (to 2nd :)
Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven:

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

By Mary Baker Eddy

SH 583:12
CHURCH.  The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.

SH 136:1
Jesus established his church and maintained his mission on a spiritual foundation of Christ-healing.  He taught his followers that his religion had a divine Principle, which would cast out error and heal both the sick and the sinning.  He claimed no intelligence, action, nor life separate from God.  Despite the persecution this brought upon him, he used his divine power to save men both bodily and spiritually.

138:14-22,27

The supremacy of Spirit was the foundation on which Jesus built.  His sublime summary points to the religion of Love.
Jesus established in the Christian era the precedent for all Christianity, theology, and healing.  Christians are under as direct orders now, as they were then, to be Christlike, to possess the Christ-spirit, to follow the Christ-example, and to heal the sick as well as the sinning.

Our Master said to every follower: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature! . . .  Heal the sick! . . . Love thy neighbor as thyself!"  It was this theology of Jesus which healed the sick and the sinning.  It is his theology in this book and the spiritual meaning of this theology, which heals the sick and causes the wicked to "forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts."  It was our Master's theology which the impious sought to destroy.

SH 146:31

Divine metaphysics is now reduced to a system, to a form comprehensible by and adapted to the thought of the age in which we live.  This system enables the learner to demonstrate the divine Principle, upon which Jesus' healing was based, and the sacred rules for its present application to the cure of disease.

SH 144:30

It is a question to-day, whether the ancient inspired healers understood the Science of Christian healing, or whether they caught its sweet tones, as the natural musician catches the tones of harmony, without being able to explain them.  So divinely imbued were they with the spirit of Science, that the lack of the letter could not hinder their work; and that letter, without the spirit, would have made void their practice.

SH 97:29
Christianity is again demonstrating the Life that is Truth, and the Truth that is Life, by the apostolic work of casting out error and healing the sick.  Earth has no repayment for the persecutions which attend a new step in Christianity; but the spiritual recompense of the persecuted is assured in the elevation of existence above mortal discord and in the gift of divine Love.

SH 583:14
The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick.
SH 471:22-6
^Question^.--Are doctrines and creeds a benefit to man?
^Answer^.--The author subscribed to an orthodox creed in early youth, and tried to adhere to it until she caught the first gleam of that which interprets God as above mortal sense.  This view rebuked human beliefs, and gave the spiritual import, expressed through Science, of all that proceeds from the divine Mind.  Since then her highest creed has been divine Science, which, reduced to human apprehension, she has named Christian Science.  This Science teaches man that God is the only Life, and that this Life is Truth and Love; that God is to be understood, adored, and demonstrated; that divine Truth casts out suppositional error and heals the sick.
The way which leads to Christian Science is straight and narrow.

SH 286:1-6

To seek Truth through belief in a human doctrine is not to understand the infinite.  We must not seek the immutable and immortal through the finite, mutable, and mortal, and so depend upon belief instead of demonstration, for this is fatal to a knowledge of Science.

SH 241:23-30
One's aim, a point beyond faith, should be to find the footsteps of Truth, the way to health and holiness.  We should strive to reach the Horeb height where God is revealed; and the corner-stone of all spiritual building is purity.  The baptism of Spirit, washing the body of all the impurities of flesh, signifies that the pure in heart see God and are approaching spiritual Life and its demonstration.

SH 15:18-22
We must resolve to take up the cross, and go forth with honest hearts to work and watch for wisdom, Truth, and Love.  We must "pray without ceasing."  Such prayer is answered, in so far as we put our desires into practice.

SH 240:22-24

If at present content with idleness, we must become dissatisfied with it.

SH 327:29-2
Reason is the most active human faculty.  Let that inform the sentiments and awaken the man's dormant sense of moral obligation, and by degrees he will learn the nothingness of the pleasures of human sense and the grandeur and bliss of a spiritual sense, which silences the material or corporeal.

SH 495:25-31

^Question^.--How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of Christian Science?
^Answer^.--Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit.  Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love.

SH 98:31-5; 99:9-12
The way through which immortality and life are learned is not ecclesiastical but Christian, not human but divine, not physical but metaphysical, not material but scientifically spiritual.  Human philosophy, ethics, and superstition afford no demonstrable divine Principle by which mortals can escape from sin; yet to escape from sin, is what the Bible demands.

Truth has furnished the key to the kingdom, and with this key Christian Sci-ence has opened the door of the human understanding.  None may pick the lock nor enter by some other door.

254:6-8,20-31

God requires perfection, but not until the battle between Spirit and flesh is fought and the victory won.

This task God demands us to accept lovingly to-day, and to abandon so fast as practical the material, and to work out the spiritual which determines the outward and actual.
If you venture upon the quiet surface of error and are in sympathy with error, what is there to disturb the waters?  What is there to strip off error's disguise?
If you launch your bark upon the ever-agitated but healthful waters of truth, you will encounter storms.  Your good will be evil spoken of.  This is the cross.  Take it up and bear it, for through it you win and wear the crown.

SH 322:9
It is highly important--in view of the immense work to be accomplished before this recognition of divine Science can come--to turn our thoughts towards divine Principle, that finite belief may be prepared to relinquish its error.

SH 29:7
Christian experience teaches faith in the right and disbelief in the wrong.  It bids us work the more earnestly in times of persecution, because then our labor is more needed.  Great is the reward of self-sacrifice, though we may never receive it in this world.

35:19-25 Our church
Our church is built on the divine Principle, Love.  We can unite with this church only as we are new-born of Spirit, as we reach the Life which is Truth and the Truth which is Life by bringing forth the fruits of Love,--casting out error and healing the sick.
