The Seeing Eye and Hearing Ear

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the Feb. 24, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Psalms 111: 2,3
Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them. Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever.

Proverbs 20:12

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.

Proverbs 23:12,19,23

Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

Isaiah 11:1there, 4

there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

Isaiah 42:5-7,16,18
Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see.

Isaiah 43:1,4,8,10,12
But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.

Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.

Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.

Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God.

Luke 2: 25, 27-32,52
And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Mark 6: 56

And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

Mark 7: 32-37
And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.  And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.  And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.  And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

Matt. 20: 30-34
And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.  And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.  And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?  They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.  So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

Matt. 21:14
And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

Matt. 13:1,2,10,11,13,16
The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.  And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.

And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?  He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

Science & Health

By Mary Baker Eddy

587: 5-8
GOD.  The great I AM; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence.

586: 3,4
EYES.  Spiritual discernment,--not material but mental.

585: 1-4

EARS.  Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding.
Jesus said, referring to spiritual perception, "Having ears, hear ye not?"

273: 3,4, 9-15
The physical senses can take no cognizance of God and spiritual Truth.  Human belief has sought out many inventions, but not one of them can solve the problem of being without the divine Principle of divine Science.  Deductions from material hypotheses are not scientific.  They differ from real Science because they are not based on the divine law.
Divine Science reverses the false testimony of the material senses, and thus tears away the foundations of error.  Hence the enmity between Science and the senses, and the impossibility of attaining perfect understanding till the errors of sense are eliminated.

272: 19-25

It is the spiritualization of thought and Christianization of daily life, in contrast with the results of the ghastly farce of material existence; it is chastity and purity, in contrast with the downward tendencies and earthward gravitation of sensualism and impurity, which really attest the divine origin and operation of Christian Science.

122: 1-14
The evidence of the physical senses often reverses the real Science of being, and so creates a reign of discord,--assigning seeming power to sin, sickness, and death; but the great facts of Life, rightly understood, defeat this triad of errors, contradict their false witnesses, and reveal the kingdom of heaven,--the actual reign of harmony on earth.  The material senses' reversal of the Science of Soul was practically exposed nineteen hundred years ago by the demonstrations of Jesus; yet these so-called senses still make mortal mind tributary to mortal body, and ordain certain sections of matter, such as brain and nerves, as the seats of pain and pleasure, from which matter reports to this so-called mind its status of happiness or misery.

488: 14-21, 23-31
Question.--Do the five corporeal senses constitute man?
Answer.--Christian Science sustains with immortal proof the impossibility of any material sense, and defines these so-called senses as ^mortal beliefs^, the testimony of which cannot be true either of man or of his Maker.  The corporeal senses can take no cognizance of spiritual reality and immortality.

Mind alone possesses all faculties, perception, and comprehension.  Therefore mental endowments are not at the mercy of organization and decomposition,--otherwise the very worms could unfashion man.  If it were possible for the real senses of man to be injured, Soul could reproduce them in all their perfection; but they cannot be disturbed nor destroyed, since they exist in immortal Mind, not in matter.

489: 3-5,13-17, 24-28

If the Science of Life were understood, it would be found that the senses of Mind are never lost and that matter has no sensation.

Corporeal sense defrauds and lies; it breaks all the commands of the Mosaic Decalogue to meet its own demands.  How then can this sense be the God-given channel to man of divine blessings or understanding?

The corporeal senses are the only source of evil or error.  Christian Science shows them to be false, because matter has no sensation, and no organic construction can give it hearing and sight nor make it the medium of Mind.

214: 28-30, 32-6

Neither age nor accident can interfere with the senses of Soul, and there are no other real senses.

Spirit's senses are without pain, and they are forever at peace.  Nothing can hide from them the harmony of all things and the might and permanence of Truth.
If Spirit, Soul, could sin or be lost, then being and immortality would be lost, together with all the faculties of Mind; but being cannot be lost while God ex

215: 12-14
Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life.

485: 2,5, 14-17

Material sense is an absurd phrase, for matter has no sensation.  Science declares that Mind, not matter, sees, hears, feels, speaks.  Whatever contradicts this statement is the false sense, which ever betrays mortals into sickness, sin, and death.  If the unimportant and evil appear, only soon to disappear because of their uselessness or their iniquity, then these ephemeral views of error ought to be obliterated by Truth.  Why malign Christian Science for instructing mortals how to make sin, disease, and death appear more and more unreal?

Emerge gently from matter into Spirit.  Think not to thwart the spiritual ultimate of all things, but come naturally into Spirit through better health and morals and as the result of spiritual growth.

346: 15,16
Disbelief in error destroys error, and leads to the discernment of Truth.  There are no vacuums.  How then can this demonstration be "fraught with falsities painful to behold"?

162: 13-16
The indestructible faculties of Spirit exist without the conditions of matter and also without the false beliefs of a so-called material existence.

486: 22-26

Sight, hearing, all the spiritual senses of man, are eternal.  They cannot be lost.  Their reality and immortality are in Spirit and understanding, not in matter,--hence their permanence.

487: 6-12
There is more Christianity in seeing and hearing spiritually than materially.  There is more Science in the perpetual exercise of the Mind-faculties than in their loss.  Lost they cannot be, while Mind remains.  The apprehension of this gave sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf centuries ago, and it will repeat the wonder.

64: 30-32
Spirit will ultimately claim its own,--all that really is,--and the voices of physical sense will be forever hushed.
