A Bow of Promis on the Cloud - Noah

The following citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy were read during the April 21, 2010 Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, OH. After the readings, those attending the meeting are encouraged to share proofs of God's care.  All are lovingly invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday meetings at our church.

The Bible

Gen. 6:3 (to :)
And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh:

James 1:12
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Gen. 6:5,8-10

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.  #These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.  And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Gen. 6:13 (to 1st ,)
And God said unto Noah,

Gen. 6:14,17 (to 6th ,),18 (to ;)

Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh,

But with thee will I establish my covenant;

Gen. 7:1-5,17,19
And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.  Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.  Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.  For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.  And Noah did according unto all that the Lord commanded him.

And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.

And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.

Gen. 8:1,6,8-12,13 and Noah
And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;

And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:

Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground; But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.  And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark; And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.  And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.

and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.

Gen. 8:15-16

And God spake unto Noah, saying, Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons' wives with thee.

Gen. 9:1,9,10 (to 1st ,),11-15
And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; And with every living creature that is with you,

And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.  And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.  And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

Isa 55:6-7,9,11,12,13
Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.  For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.  Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

Isa 58:11 the (to soul),12,14 (to 1st ,)

the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul

And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth,

Jer 31:2 (to 1st ,),3 I have
Thus saith the Lord, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

Acts 2:39 the
the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Luke 12:32

Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

by Mary Baker Eddy

295:5
God creates and governs the universe, including man.  The universe is filled with spiritual ideas, which He evolves, and they are obedient to the Mind that makes them.  Mortal mind would transform the spiritual into the material, and then recover man's original self in order to escape from the mortality of this error.  Mortals are not like immortals, created in God's own image; but infinite Spirit being all, mortal consciousness will at last yield to the scientific fact and disappear, and the real sense of being, perfect and forever intact, will appear.

SH 592:22
NOAH.  A corporeal mortal; knowledge of the nothingness of material things and of the immortality of all that is spiritual.

SH 320:4
Metaphors abound in the Bible, and names are often expressive of spiritual ideas.  The most distinguished theologians in Europe and America agree that the Scriptures have both a spiritual and literal meaning.  In Smith's Bible Dictionary it is said: "The spiritual interpretation of Scripture must rest upon both the literal and moral;" and in the learned article on Noah in the same work, the familiar text, Genesis vi. 3, "And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh," is quoted as follows, from the original Hebrew: "And Jehovah said, My spirit shall not forever rule [or be humbled] in men, seeing that they are [or, in their error they are] but flesh."  Here the original text declares plainly the spiritual fact of being, even man's eternal and harmonious existence as image, idea, instead of matter (however transcendental such a thought appears), and avers that this fact is not forever to be humbled by the belief that man is flesh and matter, for according to that error man is mortal.

SH 267:19-25
When examined in the light of divine Science, mortals present more than is detected upon the surface, since inverted thoughts and erroneous beliefs must be counterfeits of Truth.  Thought is borrowed from a higher source than matter, and by reversal, errors serve as waymarks to the one Mind, in which all error disappears in celestial Truth.

494:15-19 Jesus

Jesus demonstrated the inability of corporeality, as well as the infinite ability of Spirit, thus helping erring human sense to flee from its own convictions and seek safety in divine Science.

SH 581:8-14
ARK.  Safety; the idea, or reflection, of Truth, proved to be as immortal as its Principle; the understanding of Spirit, destroying belief in matter.   God and man coexistent and eternal; Science showing that the spiritual realities of all things are created by Him and exist forever.  The ark indicates temptation overcome and followed by exaltation.

SH 22:20

Love is not hasty to deliver us from temptation, for Love means that we shall be tried and purified.

SH 267:28
"Blessed is the man that endureth [overcometh] temptation: for when he is tried, [proved faithful], he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him." (James i. 12.)

SH 239:16-20
To ascertain our progress, we must learn where our affections are placed and whom we acknowledge and obey as God.  If divine Love is becoming nearer, dearer, and more real to us, matter is then submitting to Spirit.

SH 373:1-5
If we are Christians on all moral questions, but are in darkness as to the physical exemption which Christianity includes, then we must have more faith in God on this subject and be more alive to His promises.

SH 55:21-22
The promises will be fulfilled.

322:3

When understanding changes the standpoints of life and intelligence from a material to a spiritual basis, we shall gain the reality of Life, the control of Soul over sense, and we shall perceive Christianity, or Truth, in its divine Principle.  This must be the climax before harmonious and immortal man is obtained and his capabilities revealed.  It is highly important--in view of the immense work to be accomplished before this recog-nition of divine Science can come--to turn our thoughts towards divine Principle, that finite belief may be prepared to relinquish its error.

SH 109:32
The three great verities of Spirit, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience,--Spirit possessing all power, filling all space, constituting all Science,--contradict forever the belief that matter can be actual.  These eternal verities reveal primeval existence as the radiant reality of God's creation, in which all that He has made is pronounced by His wisdom good.

SH 249:6
Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy.  Let us re-joice that we are subject to the divine "powers that be." Such is the true Science of being.  Any other theory of Life, or God, is delusive and mythological.

SH 264:32-265:15
The universe of Spirit is peopled with spiritual beings, and its government is divine Science.  Man is the offspring, not of the lowest, but of the highest qualities of Mind.  Man understands spiritual existence in proportion as his treasures of Truth and Love are enlarged.  Mortals must gravitate Godward, their affections and aims grow spiritual,--they must near the broader interpretations of being, and gain some proper sense of the infinite,--in order that sin and mortality may be put off.
This scientific sense of being, forsaking matter for Spirit, by no means suggests man's absorption into Deity and the loss of his identity, but confers upon man enlarged individuality, a wider sphere of thought and action, a more expansive love, a higher and more permanent peace.

SH 326:8-14,16-17,20-21

All nature teaches God's love to man, but man cannot love God supremely and set his whole affections on spiritual things, while loving the material or trusting in it more than in the spiritual.
We must forsake the foundation of material systems, however time-honored, if we would gain the Christ as our only Saviour.

The purpose and motive to live aright can be gained now.

Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way.

SH 454:18-19,22
Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way.

Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept.  Patience must "have her perfect work."

SH 247:24
It is Love which paints the petal with myriad hues, glances in the warm sunbeam, arches the cloud with the bow of beauty, blazons the night with starry gems, and covers earth with loveliness.

SH 561:1

The understanding of Truth and Love, the Principle which works out the ends of eternal good and destroys both faith in evil and the practice of evil, leads to the discernment of the divine idea.

SH 494:10-11
Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.
