Dare to be a Samuel, a Solomon, a Daniel

The following citations from the Bible and Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures were read during the June 10, 2009  Wednesday Testimony Meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

The Bible

Ps 144:9,12
I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.

That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:

Ps 45:10 (to ;)
Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear;

Prov 3:1-6
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.  Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.  Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

I Sam 3:1-10 Samuel, 19
Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.  And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.  And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me.  And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.  And the Lord called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.  Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him.  And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.  Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.  And the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.

And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.

Prov 4:4Let, 5-7,11-15 (to 3rd ,),18 the, 20 attend, 21-26
Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.  Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.  Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.  Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.  When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.  Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.  Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.  Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it,

the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.  Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.  For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.  Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.  Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.  Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.  Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

Ps 16:11
Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

I Kings 3:5 the Lord,6 (to 1st ,),7 O Lord,9-12 (to ;),13 (to :)
the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.  And Solomon said,

O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.

Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?  And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.  And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart;

And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour:

II Cor 9:8 God

God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

James 5:16 The
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Dan 6:1,2 (to 1st ;), 3-7,9-12 (to 1st ;),16,19-23,28
It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; And over these three presidents;

Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.  Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.  Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.  Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.  All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellers, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.

Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.  Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.  Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.  Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's decree;

Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.

Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.  And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?  Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.  My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.  Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.

So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Rom 8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Matt 4:17
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Matt 5:1,2,6,13 (to 1st :), 14-16
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Ye are the salt of the earth:

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

II Tim 3:14 continue
continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

308:14
The Soul-inspired patriarchs heard the voice of Truth, and talked with God as consciously as man talks with man.

89:20-21

Spirit, God, is heard when the senses are silent.

318:12-13

We must silence this lie of material sense with the truth of spiritual sense.

256:2-5
Advancing to a higher plane of action, thought rises from the material sense to the spiritual, from the scholastic to the inspirational, and from the mortal to the immortal.

90:24-25, 27
The admission to one's self that man is God's own likeness sets man free to master the infinite idea.

The understanding and recognition of Spirit must finally come, and we may as well improve our time in solving the mysteries of being through an apprehension of divine Principle.  At present we know not what man is, but we certainly shall know this when man reflects God.

284:31-32
The intercommunication is always from God to His idea, man.

571:12 If so (only)
If so, listen and be wise.

495:28-31
Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love.

233:1
Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power.  These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them.  This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil.

326:16-21
The purpose and motive to live aright can be gained now.  This point won, you have started as you should.  You have begun at the numeration-table of Christian Science, and nothing but wrong intention can hinder your advancement.  Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way.

15:18
We must resolve to take up the cross, and go forth with honest hearts to work and watch for wisdom, Truth, and Love.  We must "pray without ceasing."  Such prayer is answered, in so far as we put our desires into practice.  The Master's injunction is, that we pray in secret and let our lives attest our sincerity.

57:15-18
Beauty, wealth, or fame is incompetent to meet the demands of the affections, and should never weigh against the better claims of intellect, goodness, and virtue.

285:32
 It is essential to understand, instead of believe, what relates most nearly to the happiness of being.  To seek Truth through belief in a human doctrine is not to understand the infinite.  We must not seek the immutable and immortal through the finite, mutable, and mortal, and so depend upon belief instead of demonstration, for this is fatal to a knowledge of Science.  The understanding of Truth gives full faith in Truth, and spiritual understanding is better than all burnt offerings.

275:14
All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, and effect belong to God.  These are His attributes, the eternal manifestations of the infinite divine Principle, Love.  No wisdom is wise but His wisdom; no truth is true, no love is lovely, no life is Life but the divine; no good is, but the good God bestows.

454:5-9
The understanding, even in a degree, of the divine All-power destroys fear, and plants the feet in the true path, --the path which leads to the house built without hands "eternal in the heavens."

506:10
Through divine Science, Spirit, God, unites understanding to eternal harmony.  The calm and exalted thought or spiritual apprehension is at peace.  Thus the dawn of ideas goes on, forming each successive stage of progress.

452:10-12
When outgrowing the old, you should not fear to put on the new.  Your advancing course may provoke envy, but it will also attract respect.

464:23-24
The weapons of bigotry, ignorance, envy, fall before an honest heart.

426:5-9
The discoverer of Christian Science finds the path less difficult when she has the high goal always before her thoughts, than when she counts her footsteps in endeavoring to reach it.  When the destination is desirable, expectation speeds our progress.

239:16
To ascertain our progress, we must learn where our affections are placed and whom we acknowledge and obey as God.  If divine Love is becoming nearer, dearer, and more real to us, matter is then submitting to Spirit.  The objects we pursue and the spirit we manifest reveal our standpoint, and show what we are winning.

254:10
When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path.  Imperfect mortals grasp the ultimate of spiritual perfection slowly; but to ^begin^ aright and to continue the strife of demonstrating the great problem of being, is doing much.

451:14
Man walks in the direction towards which he looks, and where his treasure is, there will his heart be also.  If our hopes and affections are spiritual, they come from above, not from beneath, and they bear as of old the fruits of the Spirit.

248:29-5
Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love--the kingdom of heaven--reign within us, and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.

Let us accept Science, relinquish all theories based on sense-testimony, give up imperfect models and illusive ideals; and so let us have one God, one Mind, and that one perfect, producing His own models of excellence.

Let the "male and female" of God's creating appear.

21:9
If the disciple is advancing spiritually, he is striving to enter in.  He constantly turns away from material sense, and looks towards the imperishable things of Spirit.  If honest, he will be in earnest from the start, and gain a little each day in the right direction, till at last he finishes his course with joy.
